
The 1A State Championships took part in Richfield this weekend at the Sevier Valley Center on the campus of Snow College. The Green River Pirates entered in the No. 14 spot and would face the Manila Mustangs in the second round. After taking a loss in the first match they fell into the consolation round and faced the Escalante Moquis taking a loss and ending their 2024 campaign.
In the opening match, Green River faced Manila. The Mustangs entered the playoffs with the No. 4 spot holding a 16-8 mark overall. in the first set, Manila came out firing but Green River kept it close as the Mustangs took a 25-15 win. The second set was more of the same for both teams as the Lady Pirates would keep it close but Manila overpowered Green River to take a 25-11 win in set two. The third and final set was almost a carbon copy of set two with the Pirates keeping it close once again but once again the Mustangs earned the win 25-12 to send the Pirates to the consolation bracket.
In game two on Friday the Lady Pirates faced the Moquis of Escalante who entered with a record of 6-13 overall and held the No.12 spot in the final RPI.
Green River jumped out in the first set in the best-of-three match to earn a 27-25 win over Escalante. In set number two the Lady Pirates battled their way through but Escalante got the better of them taking a 25-19 win.
In the third and final set, you could tell that the other matches had taken something out of the Pirates, as they couldn’t overcome the Moquis attacks and Escalante took the 25-16 win to advance ending Green River’s season.
The Lady Pirates ended the 2024 season with a 4-12 overall mark, going 2-6 in region play, and held the No. 14 spot in the final RPI of the season.
