
The Lady Dinos tennis season ended the first weekend in October at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. The Lady Dinos finished the season 6-13 overall and held a 4-4 record in region play. Numerous players came up big for the Dinos this season with Ireland Keil, Emme Stockdale, and Mandy Riggs each receiving multiple Players of the Week awards.
Below is a recap of matches throughout the season.
August 12 at Union- Loss 4-2
Lady Dinos tennis was back on the court on Monday when they traveled to Rosevelt to face the Union Cougars. With three singles and three doubles on tap, Carbon dropped the meet 4-2.
Last season ended for the Lady Dinos on the opening day of the State Championships at Liberty Park.
The first matches of the season took place in Roosevelt as the Lady Dinos took on the Union Cougars.
In the opening match for first singles Carbon’s Lisa King would take the straight-set victory 6-3 and 6-4. In the second doubles match Carbon’s Ireland Keil fought as both sets went down to the wire losing 7-5, and 7-5. Lady Dino Leah Sweeney won her third singles match in three sets 6-2, 2-6, and 10-8.
In doubles, the first doubles team of Mandy Riggs and Gianna Valdez lost in straight sets 6-0 and 6-3. Emily Dufour and Emme Stockdale fell in their second doubles match 6-0 and 6-2. And in third doubles Kiley Sasser and Jocelyn Dimick also fell in straight sets 6-1 and 6-3.
August 16 vs. Emery- Win 5-1
The Lady Dinos and Lady Spartans tennis squads met this season for the first of two region meetings on Friday in Price. Over the six matches, Carbon handed Emery a 5-1 loss in their first season match.
In first singles, Lisa King defeated Emery’s Tatum Jensen in straight sets 6-0 and 6-0. Ireland Keil won her second doubles match 6-1, 6-0 over Dorian Price of Emery, and in the final singles match, Mandy Riggs earned a 6-0 and 6-1 victory over Abbie Jensen in third singles.
In doubles matches, the Lady Spartan’s Acelyn Migliori and Julila Peterson defeated Carbon’s Leah Sweeney and Gianna Valdez in first doubles 6-3 and 6-4, and in second doubles Carbon’s Emily Dufour and Emme Stockdale got a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tandy Bennett and Lily Sorensen, and Kiley Sasser and Jocelyn Dimick were able to win their third double match 6-2, 6-1.
August 20 at Canyon View- Win 5-1
Carbon girl’s tennis was back on the courts on Tuesday on the road in Cedar City to face the Canyon View Lady Falcons. Carbon went on to sweep all of their singles matches and dropped just one doubles match to get the Region 12 win.
The singles matches were a perfect sweep for Carbon as Lisa King and Leah Sweeney both won their matches in straight sets 6-3 and 6-0. In the third singles match Gianna Valdez defeated Canyon View’s Mackenzie Beck 6-4 in set one and needed a little extra in the second set taking the win 7-5.
In first doubles Ireland Kreil and Mandy Riggs had the only loss of the day as the Lady Falcon’s Aliyah Hathaway and Jayda Hathaway got the 6-4. 6-4 victory. Emily Dufour and Emme Stockdale earned a 6-0 and 6-2 win, and Kiley Sasser and Jocelyn Dimick won their third doubles match 6-1 and 6-1.
August 27 at Emery- Win 4-2
The Lady Spartans and Lady Dinos tennis squads met up on Tuesday in Castle Dale. Both teams were part of the Carbon Invitational over the weekend and they faced each other in their second region match-up with Carbon taking the 4-2 win.
At the Carbon Invitational, Carbon finished the weekend in fifth place while the Lady Spartans ended in eighth.
In the opening matches of the day Carbon took wins in all three singles matches with Ireland Kiel taking the 6-3, 7-5 win over Julia Peterson in first singles. Leah Sweeney earned the 6-4, 6-1 win over Emery’s Tatum Jensen in second singles and in the final singles match of the day, Gianna Valdez collected the 6-2 and 6-0 win over Dorian Price.
In first doubles, Emery’s Tailynn Minchey and Acelyn Migliori earned the 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Carbon’s Mandy Riggs and Lisa King. The Lady Dinos second doubles team of Emily Dufour and Emme Stockdale earned the 7-6 (8-6) and 6-1 win. Tandy Bennett and Brin Grange took the 6-4 and 6-4 win over Carbon’s Kiley Sasser and Jocelyn Dimick.
August 28 at North Sanpete- Loss 6-0
August 29 at Manti- Win 3-2
Carbon Lady Dinos tennis competed in a pair of matches to end the week. On Wednesday, they traveled to Mt. Pleasant to face the North Sanpete Hawks taking the 6-0 loss, then on Thursday they were at home to face Manti and earned a 3-2 win.
In the North Sanpete matches Lisa King in first singles fell in her first set 6-4 and came back to earn a 6-3 win in set two, unfortunately she would have to retire in set three falling in the match. The other two singles matches were straight-set losses for the Lady Dinos.
In doubles, The Lady Dinos would take losses in all three matches, with the final two going the distance. In the second doubles match Mandy Riggs and Kiley Sasser dropped the first set 6-3, and then came back to win set two 7-5, but fell in the third 6-1. Jocelyn Dimick and Cecily Riley were handed a loss in the first set 6-3, then came back to win in the second 6-4 only to lose the third 6-2.
On Thursday, the Manti Templars came to Price with Carbon earning the 3-2 victory.
In the first singles match, Ireland Keil lost in a hard-fought battle 7-5 and 7-5. Leah Sweeney won her second singles match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 and Mandy Riggs won in third singles 6-2 and 6-3.
The first doubles team of Emily Dufour and Emme Stockdale earned a grueling three-set win 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4) and 6-0.
September 3 at Richfield- Loss 5-1
Lady Dino tennis welcomed the Richfield Wildcats to Price on Tuesday for a region match. Carbon was only able to earn one win in first singles as the Wildcats handed the Dinos the 5-1 loss.
Ireland Kriel won in her match with the Wildcats Peyton Byers but it was a hard-fought battle 7-6 (7-2) and 7-6 (7-3). Leah Sweeney and Gianna Valdez both dropped their singles matches in straight sets.
The first two doubles matches were both straight-set losses. Emily Dufour and Emme Stockdale dropped their first doubles match 6-2 and 6-2. Mandy Riggs and Kiley Sasser in second doubles lost 6-1, 6-4. The third doubles team of Jocelyn Dimick and Cecily Riley lost to Richfield’s Laukau Taufatofua and Emma Peterson. Carbon won the first set 6-3, but the Richfield duo took the next two 7-6 (7-4) and 6-1.
September 5 vs. Juab- Loss 6-0
Lady Dinos’ tennis has had a busy week. Starting Tuesday they welcomed Richfield to Price falling in six matches to the Wildcats. On Thursday, the Juab Wasps came to town and Carbon could not collect a win, losing 6-0 to the Wasps.
In the singles matches Ireland Keil, Leah Sweeney, and Mandy Riggs all lost in straight sets.
In first doubles, Emily Dufour and Emme Stockdale dropped their first set in a close one, 7-5, and fell in set two 6-4. The opening set of the second doubles match was a marathon but Gianna Valdez and Kiley Sasser dropped that one 7-6 (12-10), set two was another loss 6-2. The third doubles match featuring Jocelyn Dimick and Cecily Riley fell in straight sets 6-2 and 6-2.
September 10 vs. Delta- Win 4-2
The Lady Dinos tennis team welcomed the Delta Rabbits to Price. Through six matches, Carbon earned the 4-2 win in region play.
Leah Sweeney won in her second singles match against Savannah Young 6-2 and 6-2. In the third singles match Carbon’s Mandy Riggs Claimed victory over Debrey Fowles 6-1 and 6-4.
In doubles matches, Gianna Valdez and Cecily Riley won their second doubles match dropping the first set 4-6, but coming back to take the next two sets 6-4, and 6-3, and in the third doubles match Abby Tharp, and Kamberlee Hoffman cruised through the first set 6-1 but had to fight through the second set to win 7-6 (13-11).
October 3-5 State Championships
The tennis regular season ended on the road in St. George on September 21 and was followed up by the Region Championships last Wednesday. The pairings have been released and Carbon will have all five spots filled when the State Championships start Thursday at Bingham High School. The final rounds will take place at Liberty Park on Friday and Saturday.
In the first singles, Ireland Keil will be facing Paya Maughn from Grand, the winner of the match will move on to face Mya Deaton of South Sevier. Leah Sweeney will represent the Dinos in the second singles taking on Sophia Scott of Grand, Sweeney met up with Scott on August 23 taking a 3-1, 3-0 win. The winner will advance to play Macy Dee of Morgan, and in third singles, Mandy Riggs will square up with Savannah Young of Delta, these two went against one another on September 13 with Young pulling off the 8-2 win.
In first doubles, Emme Stockdale and Emily Dufour will take on Avery Costello and Mary Slatter of St. Joesph’s Catholic High School from Ogden. The winner of this match will advance to face Jane Borst and Savanna O’Connell from Rowland Hall. The second doubles team of Gianna Valdez and Kiley Sasser with meet up with the Emery duo of Lily Sorensen and Izzi Turner, the winner of this match will take on Lucy Beutler and Cate Ludlow of Juab.
Over the weekend, the tennis season came to a close in the 3A at the State Championships that were held at Brighton High School and then concluded at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. As the fall season closes out summer, tennis was the first sport to close out the season and the Lady Dinos represented the “Blue and White” well.
Ireland Keil started post-season play taking on Paya Maughn from Grand High School. Maughn came out and earned a win to move on 6-2 and 6-4. Maughn dropped her round of 16 match with Mya Deaton of South Sevier.
Leah Sweeney, in second singles, earned a first-round victory in straight sets over Sophia Scott of Grand, 6-4 and 6-3, and punched her ticket to the next round, where she faced Macey Dee of Morgan. Sweeney lost the match in two sets 6-0 and 6-0, and Dee would continue on to earn a state championship in second singles.
In third singles, Mandy Riggs met up with Savannah Young of Delta and fell in their match 6-0, 6-0.
Emme Stockdale and Emily Dufour went up against Avery Costello and Mary Slatter of St. Joseph’s Catholic School, and after the Lady Dinos won set number one 6-1, the next two sets to Costello and Slatter 6-1 and 6-2.
And in second doubles, Gianna Valdez and Kiley Sasser took on Izzi Turner and Lily Sorensen of Emery with the Lady Spartan duo taking the 6-4, 6-3 win.
