The Pirate boy’s basketball squad got things rolling on Thursday on the road taking on the Telos Titans, earning an 89-60 win, they would follow that up with a home-opening win against the San Juan Broncos 54-53.
The Pirates closed out last season with an 18-9 record overall going 9-0 in region play, they also earned the No. 8 spot in the final RPI and a first-round bye but fell to the Milford Tigers in the second round.
Getting the season started on the road is never fun, however, the Pirates’ road trip to face Telos turned out to be the perfect start as Green River jumped out to take an 18-14 lead after the first quarter. The second was another close one as Telos proved that they weren’t going anywhere staying close as Green River would outscore them 21-18 taking a 39-32 lead to the locker room.
The third quarter was where the Pirates opened up the offense and turned up the defense holding Telos to 12 and putting up 25 to push their lead to 64-44. Green River took over once again in the fourth matching their point total from quarter three and giving up 16 to the Titans, earning the 89-60 win.
Jason Hernandez led all scorers with 30 for Green River, Antonio Macias added 24 and Rolando Anguiano added 19 in the win.
Saturday afternoon the San Juan Broncos visited Green River in a game that would turn out to be a nail-biter.
The game was played tightly throughout with the Broncos holding a slight edge at the end of the first 15-12. The Pirates were able to come back in the second quarter closing the gap to go to the locker room at halftime down by one 26-25.
The Pirates would use the third quarter to get some distance between themselves and San Juan to carry a 44-38 lead to the fourth and final quarter. San Juan threw everything they had at Green River and outscored them in the quarter but fell just short 54-53 allowing Green River to move to 2-0 on the season.
Hernandez would once again lead the Pirates scoring 25 in the game, Anguiano added 19, and Macias 10 in the win.
The Pirates will be off until next Tuesday when they will welcome the Milford Tigers for a rematch of their state playoff loss.
Game time is set for 6:00 p.m..
