Looking to bounce back from a season-opening loss to the Union Cougars just days before, the Carbon Dinos Boys Basketball team welcomed the South Summit Wildcats to town on Friday, Nov. 22 for their home opener. In a game separated by a few key runs, the Wildcats overcame a scrappy Dino defense to win 76-60.

Opening the game it was senior Cannon Mortensen and junior Logan Bennett setting the tone for Carbon, which throughout the evening was defined by aggressive defensive and rebounding efforts in an attempt to halt a potent South Summit offensive attack. Focusing on Wildcats senior Logan Woolstenhulme – who entered the game fresh off a 31-point performance against the Emery Spartans – the Dinos would make him earn every point, forcing him to the charity stripe several times.

Thanks to this mentality, Carbon would hold Woolstenhulme to only 13 points going into the halftime break with the score sitting at 37-28 in favor of South Summit.

The Wildcats would have a breakaway moment to start the second half, with Woolstenhulme and fellow senior Blake Osguthorpe igniting an offensive run that buried the Dinos under a barrage of threes. Carbon would try and battle back, an effort which was aided by junior Kyle Orth who scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half, but ultimately the South Summit lead would be too much to overcome as the Dinos fell 76-60.

For the Dinos, Orth finished with 15 points, Bennett ended with 13 and Cannon Mortensen delivered 11 points.

Carbon now has a week to recoup before their next game which will be on the road against the South Sevier Rams. That game is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 4. Live play-by-play action will start at 6:30 p.m. with the Landon’s Diesel Service pregame show with tipoff to follow at 7 p.m. You can stream this game on KRPX 95.3 the Peak and YouTube at Castle Country Sports-Carbon.
