Foster care is one of the most rewarding things one can do, but it can also be one of the most challenging, especially around the holidays. Because of this potential challenge, Utah Foster Care continues to build its village through the ‘Adopt a Foster Family’ program, allowing citizens from across the Castle Country to get to know and serve our area’s foster families during the holiday season.
“ Holidays are times that families gather and celebrate with each other and have family traditions. The holidays can be a difficult time for children in foster care. They might be missing their family and the limited time they have for family visits is difficult,” explained Kobi Prettyman, lead foster adoptive consultant for Utah Foster Care,” Foster families spend time making sure that the children can see family during the holidays. These visits can result in increased emotional issues that foster parents have to delicately manage along with all the regular holiday activities they participate in.”
This is where the public comes in, by adopting a foster family you not only get to know these families but provide service for them. This can come in various ways, including shoveling snow, dropping off dinner, caroling and dusting off their cars in the morning, any way that you feel you can support the family you are encouraged to do.
This opportunity is open to individuals, families, church groups or businesses who want to help make the holidays easier for our local foster families. For those interested, you can contact Prettyman at Kobi.prettyman@utahfostercare.org or (435) 269-5978.
