It’s pedal to the metal time across the Carbon School District, as teachers and students alike prepare for the end of the second-semester push. At Sally Mauro Elementary, this push for academics is mixed with a healthy dose of fun to keep students engaged while also making sure they are educated. Principal Blake Allen sat down with Castle Country Radio to reflect on the school year, as well as look ahead to what’s coming next for the Sally Mauro Bulls.
“We’ve kind of changed our school theme this year for the students to rock their school year,” explained Principal Allen,” With that being said, we want the students to rock their education, to feel involved, we’re going to push them and we want them to push themselves to their limits. We want them to make the gains that they are capable of making during the school year.”
The theme of ‘Rock the School Year’ has come with several activities to help drive students to be the best they can be,” we’ve done a bunch of fun things with ‘Rock the School Year’. We’ve had a ‘Rock your School Week’ here where we’ve decorated the hallways. We had a big rock concert. We’ve just done a bunch of fun things for the kids and the teachers have put in a lot of effort for these things.”
Switching gears, Principal Allen discussed what the emphasis is academically going into the remainder of the second quarter and the rest of the school year. “We’re looking to focus on our interventions with the kids. We want them to make the growth that they can for ELA and math. For those interventions, we’re looking at the areas where the students have holes and we’re trying to fill those so they can progress to their potential.” He continued,” Students make leaps and bounds of growth through this point of the year. And so through those interventions, we’re trying to get them pushed as far as we can.”
Principal Allen also talked about the new language arts curriculum that has been implemented across the state,” It’s a lot of work for the teachers, but they are pushing through it and it’s going to be great for the students. With a new program in place, it’s going to be great for the veteran teachers and for new teachers that come in. I just think it’s going to push these students and help them to have a common curriculum throughout the grade levels.”
Allen then wanted to give a shoutout to the school’s community,” we have a great staff. We have a great team out here. A huge shout out to all the teachers, all the staff at the school and our PTO. Everybody here works super hard to have fun with the students.”
The principal then looked ahead to an upcoming holiday event for the Bulls,” So on Dec. 6, we have breakfast for the students. The PTO set this up and they’re calling it ‘Grubbing with the Grinch’. So there’s going to be breakfast and pictures with the Grinch. So the students will come in, they’ll get breakfast and then they’ll get to take a picture with the Grinch. The students need to learn academics, but we have to make it fun.”
In closing, Principal Allen shared,” I just want a huge shoutout to all the staff here at Sally Mauro, they’re great. I couldn’t do this job without them. It takes everybody to run a school and I appreciate all of their hard work.
