
The Green River Pirate basketball squad carried a 2-0 record into their non-region tilt on Tuesday night with the Milford Tigers. Even though the first three quarters were played to just a three-point advantage for the Tigers, Milford came alive in the fourth and pushed their way to a 67-52 win, handing the Pirates their first loss of the season.
The Pirates had claimed wins in their first two games of the season against Telos and San Juan, Milford would put an end to the streak at two.
Both teams came out in the first and matched each other point-for-point getting to the end of the quarter tied at 18-18. Milford came out in the second and would outscore the Pirates 17-13 to take a slight edge into the locker room at halftime 35-31.
Green River took an advantage in the third however the pace had slowed from the first half with the Pirates outscoring the Tigers 11-10 and going to the final eight minutes down by three, 45-42. In the fourth Milford turned the offense back on and found their defense as well exploding for 22 points all the while holding Green River to 10, as the Tigers would earn the 67-52.
Green River’s Rolando Anguiano led all scorers with 28 in the contest. Jason Hernandez poured in 20 and Antonio Macias added four points in the loss.
The Pirates will get back on the court on Friday night when they welcome the Tigers, this time from Tabiona to Green River.
Game time is set for 7:00 p.m..
