After a week of rest, the Carbon Dinos boy’s basketball team returned to the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 4, where they would take on the Rams of South Sevier. In a game that would take an overtime period to decide, the Dinos would fall in heartbreaking fashion 69-65.

The first half featured a back-and-forth affair, with both teams failing to gain an edge on the other. Turnovers played a key factor for the Dinos, as they gave up the ball 15 times, 11 of coming in the first quarter. This was balanced out however by a poor free-throw shooting performance by the Rams. Going into the halftime break South Sevier would hold a slim 29-25 edge.

Coming out of the break, Carbon played with a renewed sense of intensity, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Forcing turnovers, blocking shots and ripping down rebounds, the Dinos would hold the Rams to only six points. This grand defensive stand would make it a 35-35 ballgame heading into the fourth quarter.

The two teams would continue to trade blows going into the fourth, with each basket scored being answered in kind by their opponent. For the Dinos, it would be junior Kyler Orth leading the charge scoring-wise, with lots of assistance from seniors Rydge Butler and Cannon Mortensen who came up clutch with a pair of timely shots. For the Rams, senior center Mackson Bastian would come alive, scoring seven of his nine points in the final frame.

Carbon would have a chance to win it at the buzzer, but unfortunately, the potential game-winner skipped off the right iron, and the two teams headed to overtime.

In the extra action, South Sevier would go on an early five-point run and not look back, as they outscored Carbon 15-11 in overtime to claim the 69-65 victory.

Leading the way for the Dinos scoring-wise was Orth, who ended the night with 26 points. Cannon Mortensen would end with seven, senior Evan Lancaster with eight and in his season debut Butler would finish with nine.

The loss slips the Dinos to 0-3 on the young season. Looking ahead, Carbon will now make the trip to Richfield to participate in the 2a/3a Preview in the Sevier Valley Center. Here they will first take on the San Juan Broncos on Friday, Dec. 6 at 12:30 p.m.
