
Over the weekend the Sevier Valley Center on the campus of Snow College Richfield welcomed in teams from the 1A class for the 1A Preview. Green River would play two games in as many days against Piute and Valley falling short in both.
In their opening game on Friday, the Pirates faced the Piute Thunderbirds. The first two quarters were well-balanced with neither team pulling away from the other as Piute took a one-point lead at the end of the opening quarter and then Green River came back in the second to edge the Thunderbirds going into the locker room at halftime, 15-13.
In the third quarter, Green River went to work again to build on their lead outscoring Piute by one and carrying a 30-27 lead to the fourth. The fourth was where Piute took control putting up 12 and then turning on the defense to hold the Pirates to three, and would actually come back to tie up the score forcing overtime. In the extra period, the Thunderbirds would completely shut down Green River holding them scoreless and taking a 45-33 win.
Rolando Anguiano would lead all scorers in the contest with 22. Cristian Mendoza added eight and Antonio Macias added five in the loss.
On Saturday, the Pirates would take on the Valley Buffaloes. Green River was outgunned from the beginning as the Buffaloes jumped out in the first quarter and never looked back taking the 70-38 win.
Valley would explode for 22 in the first quarter and then defensively held the Pirates to eight in the quarter. Green River came out in the second and was able to hold the Buffaloes to 13 in the quarter and scored 11 to cut into the Valley lead going into the locker room 35-19.
Coming out in the third, the Buffaloes would go right back to work throwing 20 points on the board and holding the Pirates to nine in the quarter as they went to the final eight minutes with a huge lead 55-28. Valley took control again in the fourth to close out Green River 70-38.
Boede Cox from Valley led all scorers with 16.
Anguiano scored 12 for the Pirates. Mendoza added 10 and David Mendez had eight in the loss.
Green River will travel to Pinnacle on Thursday to take part in the Panther Winter Classic.
Their first game will be against Merit Preparatory Academy.
