At approximately 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway Six near Diamond Fork resulted in a fatality and stoppage of both directions of traffic on the highway.
A Utah Highway Patrol spokesperson said that in addition to the fatality, two people are in critical condition, with two others sustaining less serious injuries.
The identity of the woman killed has been released as Limbert De La Cruz Acosta, a 29 year old resident of Ephraim, Utah.
According to the UHP, the accident occurred when a black Kia Soul traveling eastbound lost control and began spinning into the westbound lanes. A white Kia Sportage traveling in the westbound lanes struck the Kia Soul and sent it into a white Kia Telluride, which was also traveling westbound. During this second crash, Acosta – who was in the backseat and unrestrained – was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene.
“The driver and front seat passenger of the Soul sustained injuries and were both transported to a local hospital via ambulance. Multiple occupants of the Sportage had minor injuries and were transported by ambulance,” reads a release from the UHP,” The two occupants of the Telluride sustained minor injuries and neither were transported.
A helicopter attempted to land at the scene to provide aid but was reportedly unable to do so due to high winds in the area.
Following an hour-long delay, traffic was reopened around 4:10 p.m., with each direction being contained to one lane each. In a statement released by the Utah Department of Transportation on X, formerly Twitter, the organization states,” Expect extended delays,” and advised using alternate routes.
