Music flows through the Castle Country Area in all forms. Whether it be garage bands, jam sessions or more organized choirs, the residents of the area love to express themselves through music. One such group is looking for more members, as the Castle Valley Youth Orchestra is searching for violins, violas, cellos, and string bass players. To discuss this search and the orchestra in general, mother-daughter duo SeLinda and Abby Bryant sat down with Castle Country Radio to speak on the organization.
“About 13 or 14 years ago, the orchestra started with another lady here in town. And we together did a fiddling camp over the summers and we went and performed at fairs and different town days,” spoke SeLinda of the group,” And then we decided we wanted to play more genres of music. So we decided to do the youth orchestra. We didn’t start until about 2018 when we met Annaliese Clark, who’s the other conductor with us.”
SeLinda then covered the finer details of the group, first speaking on the level of music the group plays,” we play on middle school level music right now. And it’s a youth orchestra in the title, but don’t be scared. We have elementary kids, teens and adults all part of this group. If you’re interested and just moved into the area, we would love to have you.”
The conductor also spoke on the Utah State University Eastern Orchestra,” They have been kind of slowly progressing and getting to become a bigger entity. And this year they finally were able to become an actual orchestra class. Anybody from the community is welcome to join. If you’re a student, you can take it as a credit and they will begin meeting next Thursday at 7 p.m. in the USUE Choir Building.”
Abby Bryant then took the microphone to speak on her experience with the orchestra. Playing violin, she spoke about what she enjoys most about playing in the orchestra,” I really enjoy doing the orchestra. I’ve done it since it started and it’s just really cool to start making music with people from the community and get to know them and get to bring more music into the world.”
Abby also provided encouragement for people who are looking to join the group,” I just like to say, if you are on the fence about joining or not, you really should, because it’s really a great opportunity and it’s been so much fun.”
Practices are held once a week on Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Price. For more information on the orchestra and other groups within the Castle Country, you can join the Facebook group Castle Valley Musicians.
