Looking to avenge an early season loss to the Delta Rabbits, the Carbon Dinos hit the road on Wednesday, Jan. 22, to take on Delta in their home arena. In a game that was close until the final frame, Carbon would drop the road tilt to the Rabbits 58-41 after being held to a single point in the fourth quarter.
Offense would be at a premium for the Dinos to open the contest, with Delta jumping out to an early 10-2 lead. Things would look bleak until Kyler Orth checked into the game, immediately uncorking the offense and helping Carbon claw back into the game and make it a 12-9 affair in favor of the Rabbits at the end of one.
Both teams would find their stroke from the field in the second period, unfortunately for Carbon, Delta’s offense would be primarily from beyond the arc. Delta juniors Bronco Bundy and Mason Robinson combined for eight threes in the half. Orth would continue to score in bunches for the Dinos, ending the half with 10 points and holding the Rabbits to a 33-26 halftime advantage.
The start of the third quarter brought a renewed intensity to both squads, for Carbon it was senior Cannon Mortensen finally getting things going, scoring in all spots. This was in conjunction with fellow senior Maxwell Carlson, whose midrange magic was in full effect for the Dinos. This effort was matched by Delta, who outscored Carbon by a single point, giving them a 48-40 lead heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter would be dominated by the Rabbits, who forced 10 Carbon turnovers and held the Dinos to a single point in the final stanza. This lockdown defense and continued offensive success elevated Delta to a 58-41 victory over Carbon,
In the score book, Carbon’s leader was Orth, who finished the contest with 13 points. Cannon Mortensen would close with eight points, Evan Lancaster and Carter Branch would contribute five apiece, and the duo of Ty Mortensen and Carlson would each record four points.
The loss brings Carbon to 4-14 overall on the season and 1-8 in region play.
Carbon will have a day to recuperate before they welcome the Richfield Wildcats (14-3, 9-0 Region 12) into town on Friday, Jan. 24.
