Emery County Commissioner Jordan Leonard called into the KOAL newsroom to provide his biweekly update on the state of Emery County. Topics such as upcoming events, a recap of Jan. 21’s Commission Meeting, and his biweekly departmental shoutout filled the conversation.

The first item covered by the Commissioner was the approval of a donation to the Castle Country Classic Livestock Show,” that’s a very cool event that gets our Carbon and Emery County kids with their animals to a livestock show. So we were able to give a donation to support them as they have that event this summer. But it’s just good for our youth to learn work ethic and raise animals. It just creates hard workers and good people.”

Leonard shifted focus to another agenda item from the Commission meeting. Four Corners Community Behavioral Health presented at the meeting, asking for input on how to best help the community. “ Four Corners is just a great partner for substance use and mental health issues. And, you know, life’s not easy, life’s tough. And we want to have the resources for our community to know that they can go somewhere and support Four Corners.” He added,” They have a great board that helps manage the area. I just wanted to give them a shoutout.”

Next, Commissioner Leonard directed his attention toward upcoming events within Emery, starting with the county’s cornhole league. ” There’s a Cornhole League every Sunday in the recreation center at 2 p.m. It’s for all ages, and it’s $5 a player each week. They play different games. And if you love cornhole, come on out.”

He also spoke on the Junior Entrepreneurship program held within the county,” It allows the youth that participate to have their business shown at the county fair and other different events in the county. The lessons that are learned there are lifelong so it’s an educational academy. We’d love to have your kids at our Junior Entrepreneurship Program.”

Leonard continued, explaining how to register for the program,” You can go to the Emery County Business Chamber website and sign your youth up for that. So I want to give a shoutout to them as well. Make sure your youth are getting involved with entrepreneurship.”

Continuing with the Business Chamber, Leonard discussed the upcoming ‘Beat the Winter Blues Festival’ being held Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25. “ That’s a fun event. You know, there’s a lot of things going on during the summer, but sometimes we get the winter blues and this is a nice event with crafts and food and just to mingle together to say, ‘Hey, the winter is tough. It’s cold. And let’s get together and enjoy each other’s company and allow our entrepreneurs to sell their goods.’”

Closing out our conversation, the Commissioner shared, “We are focusing on events and bringing people into our community and wanting them to support our businesses while they’re here. And so we appreciate you coming here and supporting our activities, events and community.”
