The Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS) has opened applications for entrepreneurs around the state to apply for a license to run a package agency. Of the 37 available locations for one of these shops, two are wanted in Emery County and two in Carbon County.
Package agencies are privately owned retail liquor stores that typically serve areas without state-run liquor stores. These agencies operate on three-year, renewable contracts with the DABS.
Within the Castle Country, the DABS is accepting applications for package agency locations in Helper, Sunnyside, Castle Dale and Green River.
“ Package agencies often look like small retail liquor stores located in rural parts of Utah where state liquor stores are sparse. These stores are built into the fabric of tight-knit small towns, serving local residents and tourists visiting Utah’s scenic attractions. Utahns are known for their entrepreneurial spirit and we hope to receive a diverse and qualified pool of applicants interested in the opportunity,” said DABS Director Tiffany Clason.
Applications for a package agency contract are currently open and will be available until Monday, March 10. In May, applications will be publicly reviewed, and contracts awarded.
This process is overseen by the Alcoholic Beverage Services Commission, with Commission Chair Steve Handy stating, “The commission hopes to see applicants that demonstrate good business management skills and understand the unique nature of the respective communities where they would operate.”
