Looking to bounce back from an overtime loss, the Emery Spartans hit the road on Wednesday, Jan. 29, and made the long trip to Cedar City to face the Canyon View Falcons. A decisive third quarter in which the Falcons scored 23 points was the difference maker, as Canyon View sent Emery home with a 67-47 loss.

The first quarter would be the most hotly contested of the contest, as although the Spartans were held to single digits in scoring, the team would keep a powerful Falcon offense in check only allowing 15 points. A majority of Emery’s points would come at the charity stripe, as they were unable to convert on a field-goal attempt until 3:35 remained on the clock. At the end of one, Canyon View held a 15-9 advantage.

The second quarter would be nearly identical for the two squads, as again the Falcons put up 15 in the frame with Emery adding nine more to their total. This duplicate quarter aided Canyon View as they entered the half up 30-18 over the Spartans.

The difference maker in the game would prove to be the third period, as Canyon View caught fire, hanging 23 points on Emery while holding the Spartans to 13. This double-digit difference ballooned the Falcons’ lead to 22, making it 53-31 entering the final quarter.

The fourth quarter would be the only time Emery would outscore Canyon View, finally chipping into the Falcons’ lead. But it was too little too late as the Spartans would fall 67-47.

Leading the way for the Spartans was senior Porter Hurdsman, who closed the game with nine points. Behind him were fellow seniors Will Jeffs with eight and Scott Johansen with seven. Also making it into the scoring column was Jace Frandsen who ended with six points, Brek Griffin with five and West Johansen with four.

The loss moves Emery to 9-11 on the season and 6-5 in region play. The Spartans now look ahead to a Friday night showdown against the Carbon Dinos on Jan. 31. Live coverage for that game will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Landon’s Diesel Service Pregame show with tipoff following at 7 p.m.

That game will be streamed on both KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM and Castle Country Sports-Emery on YouTube.
