The Carbon boys and Lady Dino wrestling squads traveled to Nephi and Juab High Schools for the divisional round of wrestling over the weekend. With the regular season behind them, they took the next step toward punching their ticket to the State Championships. The boys qualified 22 wrestlers and the Lady Dinos 13, marking a great weekend for both programs.
The season for the Lady Dinos started in late November, and the boys followed in early December. Many hours were spent practicing and traveling. The divisionals are the final step before the State Championships, which are coming up at Utah Valley University next week.
Host school Juab earned the Divisional Championship with 313.5 points, Carbon finished second with 220. Morgan (219.5), Delta (204.5), and North Sanpete (146) rounded out the top five. Richfield, Summit Academy, and Juan Diego comprised the rest of the field.
Out of the 28 wrestlers the Carbon boys’ team entered into divisionals, 22 finished in eighth place or higher, qualifying for the State Championships.
Riker O’Hearon earned the divisional crown at 138 pounds making it through the weight class a perfect 3-0 defeating Delta’s Carter Anderson by fall to take the top spot. Jantz Greenhalgh went 3-1 at 106 taking second place. Andrew Kifer at 190 pounds finished in second place as well with a 3-1 mark.
Jerron Becker collected a 5-1 record in the 126-pound class with his only loss coming from Traedun Osborne of Juab by a 15-9 decision in the quarterfinals Becker avenged that loss in the third-place match beating Osborne by pin. Jack Burdick earned a third-place with a 3-1 mark and earned a win in the third-place match over Ryker Boren of Richfield. Gavin Fausett also finished 3-1 taking a win by a 13-10 decision over Juab’s Ryker Howlett in the third-place match.
Other Dinos who qualified for state are Ashdyn Densley (106 pounds), Kayden Smith (113 pounds), Jorge (JJ) Munoz (113), Conner Stowe (120), Gage Lefler (120), and Koen Labrum (132) all finished in the top eight of their weight classes.
Trace Crespin at 144 pounds also qualified as did Jack Vigor (150 pounds), James Newman (157 pounds), Bryson Ferguson (157), Alex Layva (165), Eleke Lang (165), Coleman Hinckley (175), Daxtyn Mower (215), Ben Stewart (285), and Jared Simmons (285) round out the squad Carbon will take to the State Championships.
Grantsville earned top honors on the ladies’ side with 270.0 points, Juab finished second with 216.5, and Carbon finished third with 118. Manti, Providence Hall, Emery, Morgan, Summit Academy, and Delta made up the remainder of the field.
For the Lady Dinos 13 members of the squad qualified for the State Championships, with Rickelle Collins collecting a first-place finish at 170 pounds. Collins went a perfect 3-0 including a win over Emery’s Dazi Thatcher in the semifinals, and claimed the first-place victory over Caroline Mecham of Grantsville in sudden victory.
Kallie Lefler at 100 pounds claimed second place falling just short in her first-place match against Atti Nielson of Juab. Emma Parker at 125 pounds finished 3-1 claiming victory in the third-place match over Shalice Fuentes of Emery, and Lily Provost finished third at 235 pounds.
All of 3A will converge on Utah Valley University next week February 12 & 13, for the State Championships.
