On Senior Night the Lady Spartans welcomed the North Sanpete Hawks to the Spartan Center on Tuesday evening. With the thought of a home playoff game on the horizon, it may not be the last time the seniors take the floor but they played like it, building a big lead and holding on for the 67-27 win.
With four seniors on this year’s team, the Spartan faithful thanked Katelyn Nielson, Jabry Sharp, Saige Curtis, and Kali Jensen for their service to the black and gold. Then, it was time to get to work.
The opening period was pretty even as both teams wondered what to expect as Emery held a slight edge at the end of one 12-9. In the second quarter, the Lady Spartans were on fire finding their offense and never looking back for the remainder of the contest as they outscored the Hawks 19-5, taking a 31-14 lead to the locker room at the half.
Coming out in the third, Emery went right back at it. Defensively, they slowed down anything North Sanpete tried, giving up just 6 points and scoring 20 more of their own, putting the game well in hand heading into the final eight minutes. Moving to the fourth, with the score 51-20 you would think that the Lady Spartans would ease up a little but that was far from the truth going on to put up another 16 and once again held the Hawks to single digits closing them out in front of the home crowd 67-27.
Katelyn Nielson led the Lady Spartans with 26 pulling down six rebounds and grabbing four steals. Kabree Gordon and Kali Jensen added nine points each with Jensen dishing out five assists and four steals and Gordon grabbing four rebounds and four steals in the win.
Thursday night Emery, who sits at 12-10 overall and 9-4 in Region 12, will be on the road in Nephi to take on the Juab Wasps and close out the regular season. Juab sits at 13-7 and 9-4 in region play. On January 14, the Wasps traveled to Castle Dale and were handed a 48-36 loss.
Saturday, the final RPI will be released and the State Tournament’s opening round will start on February 11.
