The high school wrestling season ended on Thursday evening in Orem at Utah Valley University, this year’s home for the 3A State Championships. The Carbon Dinos sent 21 wrestlers to the competition and came home with four top-ten finishes, including a State Champion in Riker O’Hearon.
In early December, the wrestling team got rolling and went through the season, culminating on Wednesday and Thursday. The Dinos are a young team, with three of the top four finishers being freshmen; the future looks bright for Dino Wrestling.
Juab captured their ninth straight boy’s wrestling state championship, scoring 289.5 points, with Morgan in second with 194. South Summit (183), Delta (179.5), and Canyon View (168) rounded out the top five. Carbon landed in seventh, scoring 119.5.
O’Hearon, who has battled this season, made it all worth it with his State Championship, going undefeated at 138 pounds. In his first-place match against Teegan Anderson of Juab, he registered a technical fall to claim his spot as the top wrestler in 3A.
Jantz Greenhalgh, another freshman, earned a second-place finish at 106 pounds, going 3-0 in his opening matches and earning a spot in the final, taking on Trevor Cowan of Juab. In the end, it would come down to a 7-3 decision in favor of the wrestler from Juab.
Freshman Jack Burdick finished the tournament at 3-2 to earn a fifth-place finish. Burdick earned wins in his first two matches but fell in his semifinal match with Drew Korth of Morgan; he made up for the loss with a win in the fifth-place match, earning the win over Blake Crawley of Canyon View by a 9-3 decision.
Gavin Fausett closed out his senior season with a 3-3 mark, earning a sixth-place finish. After losing his quarterfinal match, Fausett fought back to the fifth-place match, falling short by a major decision to Kaden Nowell of Canyon View.
