
The Emery Spartan boys’ wrestling squad wrapped up the season Thursday night at the 3A State Championships at Utah Valley University in Orem. The Spartans sent nine wrestlers to the tournament, and a pair of them earned a top-four finish.
Juab earned their ninth straight State Championship in the team competition, scoring 289.5 points, and Morgan came in a distant second with 194. South Summit (183), Delta (179.5), and Canyon View (168) rounded out the top five. Emery closed out the season in 12th place, scoring 43.5
Junior Dixon Peacock and senior Devon Byars each earned top finishes for the Spartans in their respective weight classes.
At 120 pounds, Peacock went 4-1, with his only loss coming against Uriah Anderson of Delta in the quarterfinals. Peacock and Anderson met again in the third-place match, and this time, the Spartan won by a 10-4 decision.
Byars, who wrestled at 190 pounds, dropped his semifinal match against eventual State Champion Ryker Woodward of South Summit, dropping him into the consolation rounds. Byars would make his way to the third-place match and have to settle for a fourth-place finish, falling to Tagg Rich of Morgan by pin.
