While many were out enjoying the extended Presidents Day weekend, the Emery County Sheriff’s Office was hard at work keeping the Castle Country Area drug-free. On the morning of Sunday, Feb. 16, the drug-busting duo of Deputy Egan Smith and K-9 Deputy Dak struck again, seizing 100 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop.

While performing a routine traffic stop in Green River, Deputy Dak was called into action after indicating that the vehicle may be holding drugs. Deputy Smith then searched the vehicle, an action which led to the discovery of the illegal substances.

“The traffickers took some extra precautions to conceal the odor of the controlled substance, but it did not work,” shared Emery County Sheriff Tyson Huntington in a social media post,” It is easy for me to showcase a large drug seizure like this but please know this is not unique to our K-9 unit. These happen every day with our Patrol and Corrections Deputies.”

Green River and Emery County as a whole fall along one of the United States’ most prolific drug trafficking highways, the Rocky Mountain High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. As such, deputies are always on the lookout for signs of illicit drug transport and use.

“The seizures may not be as big as 100 pounds of marijuana, but they are just as important and meaningful to the Deputy that is putting in the work,” said the Sheriff.

This is not the first time that Smith and Deputy Dak have seized mass amounts of illegal drugs. Since his introduction to the force in 2020, Dak has participated in numerous seizures both big and small.

Huntington closed the statement by saying,” Great job guys! I see your hard work and it is appreciated.”
