Looking to extend their season, the Emery Spartans took the court on Tuesday, Feb. 25, against a familiar opponent: the South Summit Wildcats. In a full circle moment, the Spartans ended the season how it began, with a loss to South Summit, falling 50-37.

Emery opened the game going scoreless in the first quarter. However, despite this lack of offense, the Spartans’ defense kept the game in check, with the squad holding South Summit in check only allowing 10 points.

Points would come much more easily for Emery in the second, with Porter Hurdsman tacking the first score on the board for the Spartans courtesy of a free throw. Scott Johansen would also find his rhythm, going on an individual 5-0 run. This renewed offensive look aided Emery in cutting into the Wildcats’ lead, making it an 18-9 ballgame at the halftime break.

With both offenses uncorked the two teams traded blows back and forth throughout the third quarter. Every time the Spartans gained any momentum, South Summit responded in kind. The Wildcats outscored Emery 23-16 in the frame and climbed to a 41-25 advantage entering the final period.

Jace Frandsen would start the fourth on fire, going on a 5-0 run to cut South Summit’s lead to 11. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Wildcat senior Logan Woolstenhulme would explode, scoring with ease and dishing the ball to open teammates to help South Summit to a 50-37 victory.

Leading the Spartans in scoring was Scott Johansen, who closed with 16 points. Frandsen finished with 11, Ajay Thomas had four and the duo of Hurdsman and Braxton Butler each contributed three.

With the loss, Emery’s season comes to a close, ending with a final record of 12-13 overall and 8-6 in region play.

Castle Country Radio would like to congratulate the Spartans on their stellar season and wish the seniors good luck in their future endeavors.
