On Friday afternoon, the Green River Pirates took to the floor to take on the Wendover Wildcats, with a trip to the sixth/eighth place game on the line. What should have been a simple No. 6 vs. No. 15 match-up during the regular season proved to be anything but. Proving that anything can happen in the playoffs, the Pirates’ season ended, falling 68-57.
Green River entered the contest at 20-7 holding the No. 6 spot in the RPI, and Wendover sat at 11-17 and No. 15, on paper this one should have been a walk in the park for the Pirates, but as the wise man once said, “This is why we play the game.”
Green River jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the opening quarter, but the Wildcats hit their stride in the second. Wendover came out firing and doubled up Green River 20-10 in the quarter closing the gap and taking the lead 29-24 going into the locker room at halftime.
In the third period, once again the Wildcats started fast and continued throughout putting up another 23 and pushing their lead to 52-38 going into the final eight minutes. The Pirates had one last push to try and continue their season, down by 14, Green River was able to find their offense and put 19 on the board, but Wendover kept the pace holding the Pirates at arm’s length and taking the 68-57 win.
Rolando Anguiano led the way with 26 and Jason Hernandez added 12. Cristian Venzor, a senior, played his final contest for Green River scoring 10.
The Pirates ended the season with a 20-8 overall record going 8-0 in region play.
