
The Spartan baseball squad traveled to Moab on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the Grand County Tournament. They faced four teams in three days, finishing with a 3-1 record and logging wins over host Grand, American Leadership, and San Juan. Their only loss was by one run to Beaver.
In Emery’s first game on Thursday, they faced host Grand. The Spartans got on the board early, holding the Red Devils off the scoreboard until the sixth, and powered through to take the 9-2 win.
The Spartans jumped on the board in the second, putting two up, but, more importantly, with Trevin Gilbert on the mound and the Emery defense behind him, they were able to hold Grand scoreless until they were already up six as Grand would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Emery added three more in the top of the seventh to collect a 9-2 win.
Bronx Olsen was 3-3 at the plate, scoring one run; Beau Stilson scored 2-2 with a run and three RBIs, and Tyce Larsen scored 2-3 with a pair of RBIs and scored one.
Gilbert won the complete game with two earned on two hits and striking out five.
In game two, the first of two games on Friday, the Spartans faced the American Leadership Academy Eagles. Emery took an early lead but used a big sixth inning to close out the contest 7-1.
The first inning was quiet, but the Spartans would plate two runs in the second and another in the fifth, putting the score at 3-1. Emery’s bats would come alive in the top of the sixth, adding our runs to take the 7-1 win.
Hayden Christiansen went 2-3 with one run scored. Garrett Conover was 1-2, and Stilson collected two RBIs in the win.
Zander Robinson started on the mound, going four innings with one earned run on three hits, and Jace Frandsen went two and surrendered one hit.
In the second game on Friday, they would face the Beaver Beavers. It was a tight game from beginning to end, but the Beavers handed the Spartans their only loss of the weekend, 5-4.
Emery put one run up in the first inning and followed that up with another in the third to take a 2-0 lead after the top of the inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Beaver tied things up with a pair of runs of their own. Each team would add two runs in the sixth inning, and Emery couldn’t plate any runs in the seventh, but Beaver would get one across the plate to take the 5-4 win.
Stilson was 2-3 for Emery, scoring one run. Larsen was 1-1, and Olsen went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Hayden Abrams started on the mound, going three innings and giving up two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Christiansen closed the contest, surrendering three runs on four hits with one strikeout.
The final game was a meeting with the San Juan Broncos. With the contest tied after four, the Spartans put up two more in the fifth to earn the 5-3 win.
San Juan jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one. Emery returned to tie up the game in the second inning and added one more run in the top of the third. The Broncos added one more in the fourth to regain the lead, but in the top of the fifth, the Spartans put two more on to take the 5-3 win.
Abrams went 3-4 in the contest, and Stilson closed out his great weekend by going 3-2 with a pair of hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Mason Thornley went 2-3 in the win.
Conover started on the mound, going four innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits, fanning five. Trygg Jensen closed out the game with four hits and striking out one.
The Spartans will return to work on Tuesday when they welcome Canyon View to Castle Dale.
Game time is set for 3:00 p.m..
