
Starting Thursday, Emery baseball traveled to St. George for a two-day tournament. Playing three games in two days, the Spartans were unable to get a win in three contests against Pine View, Juan Diego, and Payson.
Emery started Thursday with a contest against Pine View. The Panthers used a ten-run third inning to get the 15-0 win over the Spartans.
Pine View scored five in the top of the first and then went quiet in the second, but in the top of the third inning, they would go on a hitting spree, adding 10 runs to move the score to 15-0. The Panthers held the Spartans scoreless and ended the game in four innings.
Tyce Larsen had the lone hit for Emery, going 1-2 at the plate.
Bronx Olsen got the start on the mound, giving up seven runs, two earned on four hits, and struck out two in 2.0 innings. Zander Robinson closed the game, surrendering eight earned runs on seven hits, striking out two.
Next up was a competitive contest with Juan Diego. Emery would put up a fight in this one, but the Soaring Eagle came away with the 6-5 win.
Juan Diego started the game by adding a pair of runs at the bottom of the first. The Spartans answered back with four runs in the top of the second. However, at the bottom of the frame, the Soaring Eagles would regain the lead by scoring three runs to go up 5-4.
What came next was four innings of scoreless baseball, as neither team could plate any runs. Emery would strike first in the top of the seventh to tie up the game 5-5. Juan Diego needed just one run to take the 6-5 win.
Larsen went 2-4 with a run scored, Trevin Gilbert was 2-2, scoring one, and Olsen had a hit with a pair of RBIs.
Trygg Jensen started on the mound, going three innings with five runs, four earned on six hits with four strikeouts. Conover came in, giving up one run on two hits while striking out four.
The Spartans’ final game of the tournament was against the Payson Lions. The Spartans struggled at the plate and were unable to earn any runs, falling to the Lions 11-0 in five innings.
Payson scored one run in the first inning, but neither team could find any offense in the next two. In the fourth, Payson added a pair of runs, and then they exploded for eight runs in the fifth for eight runs, closing out the Spartans in five innings.
Larsen, Beau Stilson, and Easton Stoker each had one hit.
Hayden Christiansen got the start on the mound, going four innings and giving up six earned runs on eight hits, striking out four. Peyton Nielson closed the contest going one inning and gave up five earned on six hits.
Emery will play Juab in region action in two games. On Tuesday, they will be in Nephi, and on Friday, the Wasps will come to Castle Dale.
