The Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) released the first RPI rankings for the season on Thursday. The Lady Dinos landed in the No. 9 spot.
Union is in the top spot with a 10-4 record; Carbon will face them on April 17 in Roosevelt. Morgan, the team that knocked the Lady Dinos out of the playoffs last season, lands in spot No. 2. Last year’s State Champion, Grantsville, is in spot No. 3. North Sanpete, the first of three entries in the top ten from Region 12, sits at No. 4 and the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle rounds out the top five.
The season will end on April 29, and the next day, the final RPI and bracket for the State Championships, which start on May 3 at home sites, will be released. The tournament will begin on May 8 and conclude on the 10th in Spanish Fork.
The UHSAA adopted the RPI format in 2019 to rank teams throughout the season. This format is then used for seeding in the season-ending State Playoff Championships.
Rankings will now be updated after each regular-season game leading up to the final week of region play.
Three statistical categories determine the RPI standings:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the total available points from games played, accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP, except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
