On Friday morning, the Utah High School Activities Association released the initial RPI for boys’ soccer. The Carbon Dinos are in the second spot, behind last year’s State Champion Ogden.
The Tigers sit alone atop the rankings with a 0.802289 RPI. Carbon’s 0.656290 got them in second, just above the only team they have lost to this season, the Manti Templars, who land at No. 3. Region 12 holds spots two, three, and four, with Canyon View sitting in the fourth spot. Ben Lomond rounds out the top five.
Five of the teams in the top ten are members of Region 12. Carbon has only five games left this season, and three of those contests will be against a team in the top ten, a rematch with Manti (No. 3) on the road, Richfield (No. 6) at home, and Juab (No. 7) on the road. The season comes to a close on April 22, and the next day, the final RPI will be released along with the bracket for the State Championships, which will begin at home sites on April 25 and conclude with the Championship game on May 10 at America First field, home of Real Salt Lake.
The UHSAA adopted the RPI format in 2019 to rank teams throughout the season. This format is then used for seeding in the season-ending State Playoff Championships.
Rankings will be updated after each regular-season game leading up to the final week of region play.
Three statistical categories determine the RPI standings:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the total available points from games played, accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP, except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
