On Tuesday, Lady Spartan softball was on the road to take on the Delta Rabbits. Emery was looking for the season sweep, and they didn’t disappoint as they exploded for 17 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the 19-2 win.
Emery is now 13-10 overall and has the No. 6 spot in the RPI with five regular season games left.
Through the first few innings, you wouldn’t think the score would end up the way it did. The lone highlight in the early going for Emery was an Elli Stoker home run to center in the top of the first. In the top of the fifth, with Emery up 2-1, Kali Jensen stepped up to the plate, and after a strike and a ball, the third pitch got away from the catcher and gave Elly Stilson a scoring opportunity. The next pitch Jensen sent a shot to left field and due to a pair of errors on the play Katelyn Nielson and Jensen would come into score. By the end of the fifth, the Spartans held an 8-1 lead and worked their way through the bottom of the frame, holding Delta scoreless. Things got interesting in the top of the sixth when Emery returned to the plate.
With the Lady Spartans up 9-1, TaiLynn Minchey came to the plate and sent a single to right-field driving in Jensen and Nielson. Later in the inning, with Emery up 17-1 and with two on, Larsen stepped up and sent a fly ball to right field, driving in MiKayla Truman, and then Allison Jeffs scored on an error to put the score 19-1. The Spartans gave up one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was it, as they earned a season sweep of Delta.
Emery collected an impressive 12 hits in the contest, and they spread the wealth as no Emery player had more than one hit. Stoker was 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Lady Spartans. Minchey was 1-3 with two RBIs and a run, and Bailey Luke went 1-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Kallee Lake got the start going five innings with two hits, one run, and eight strikeouts. Jeffs closed out the contest, going one with a run and a strikeout.
Emery will be back in action on Wednesday when the Carbon Dinos come to Castle Dale. Emery began the season with an 8-2 win over the Lady Dinos and will be looking for the sweep.
Game time is set for 3:30 p.m..
