The Emery Baseball squad welcomed the North Sanpete Hawks to Castle Dale on Tuesday for the first two meetings this week. The Spartans used a big sixth inning to put the game away, taking the 7-2 win.
With eight games left, Emery is 6-11 overall and 2-5 in Region 12 play.
The Spartans’ game with the Hawks was a pitcher’s duel for the most part until the late innings, although Jace Frandsen was able to score on a steal of home in the second inning. Emery did the most damage in the sixth.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Hayden Abrams sent a double to center, driving in Peyton Nielson and Beau Stilson to move the score to 3-0. Tyce Larsen came up next and sent a line drive to right, bringing Hayden Christiansen home, and Trygg Jensen stepped into the batter’s box, sending his first pitch to right, allowing Abrams to score. Trevin Gilbert was the next batter up, and Stilson re-entered the game as a courtesy runner for Larsen and scored on a steal of home. Gilbert then got a hold of one for a single to left, and Jensen would score to run the score to 7-0. North Snapete was able to plate a pair of runs in the seventh, but Emery closed them out to take the 7-2 win.
Larsen and Jensen shared the same stat line, going 2-3 with an RBI for Emery. Abrams was 1-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
Abrams started on the mound, going five innings with three hits and seven strikeouts. Jensen came in to close the game with two innings of work and surrendered two runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out two.
The Spartans travel to Mount Pleasant on Friday to face North Sanpete for the last time in the regular season.
