If you like defensive baseball, then Nephi was the place to be on Tuesday when Carbon and the Juab Wasps hit the diamond. The Dinos’ Mike Vigil threw a great game, allowing just two hits through seven innings, and it would take an extra frame to get the 1-0 win.
This was a big win for the Dinos, who sit at 8-12 overall and 6-5 in Region 12. They also hold the No. 7 spot in the latest RPI.
This was a pitcher’s duel in every sense of the word, as both teams could hold the other off the scoreboard. The Wasps used a pair of pitchers who combined for five hits and gave up one run, while they struck out six.
Both teams leaned on their fielding to push the game to extra innings, but Carbon was able to plate the first run in the top of the eighth when Vigil stepped up to the plate and sent a line drive to center that brought in Logan Bennett to take a 1-0 lead. Paxton Falk came in to close the game and got the first three batters to hit pop flies into the outfield where the Dinos were waiting, ending the game and giving Carbon the region win.
Vigil did it all for Carbon, going 2-4 with the one RBI. Logan Bennett was 1-3 with a run scored, Ty Madsen went 1-4, and Jordan Nichols was 1-3 in the win.
Vigil started on the mound, putting in seven innings of work with two hits and striking out six. Falk came in to close out the game.
Carbon will welcome Juab (14-5, No. 3) to Price on Friday, looking for the season sweep.
The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m..
