The Price City Council, along with Mayor Micheal Kourianos, convened on Wednesday, April 23, for its biweekly meeting. This time, the council faced decisions on facilities schedules, employee policies and a proclamation for Red Ribbon Week.

Opening the meeting, Mayor Kourianos delivered the city’s safety second. With April recognized as distracted driving awareness month, Kourianos encouraged citizens to put phones on do not disturb while driving, pull over to a safe space if you have to text and to avoid eating and reaching for items while in motion.

Moving to the agenda, Torie Nelson and Brittany Johnson from Eastern Utah Softball presented to the council requesting the use of the Price City fields for their league. “As our program continues to grow, we are faced with new challenges, and our biggest concern right now is field pay,” explained Nelson. We are here tonight, asking for the use of four fields in Price, some with lights, because of daylight saving time to host our fall league.”

Deputy Public Works Director Robby Matkin – who has played a key role in the conversations surrounding the field – expressed that his only concern was the potential for schedule conflicts with other leagues running simultaneously. “I think we should have a conversation where all parties involved with the fields are OK and try to be in the middle. I think that’s the best approach,” he said.

The item was sent for further discussion with the council, Matkin and Eastern Utah Softball.

Following this, Mayor Kourianos read a proclamation, declaring May 1-7 as Elks National Drug Awareness and Red Ribbon Week.

“Whereas the benevolent and proactive order of Elks National Drug Awareness Program is the largest of all the drug awareness programs in the United States. And whereas the Elks National Drug Awareness program strives to educate all children and parents about dangers of illegal drug use and prevent the misuse of use of the legalized and prescription drugs,” reads the statement. “Price City thereby proclaims May 1 to the 7th as Red Ribbon Week.”

Moving on, the council approved measures amending the filing fee for candidates running for city government. Community Director Nick Tatton explained this was to bring the fee up to date, having not been updated in 40 years. The council also approved amendments to the Price City Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.

Rounding out the meeting was a request for additional grant funding for the Upper Price River Plan EIS Project. “It’s still moving forward. We’re nearing the end of the project, hopefully within the next. Eight months. We’ll be reaching completion on that,” said City Public Works Director Miles Nelson. This money would be used to aid in agency reviews, public hearings and other such matters. In a unanimous vote, the council approved the request.

The meeting was then adjourned.

The next Price City Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, at Price City Hall starting at 5 p.m. More information is available on pricecityutah.com or the City’s Facebook page.
