
On Friday, the Emery Spartan baseball team traveled to Richfield to face the Wildcats. The Spartans took an early lead and held off Richfield to win 9-3.
Emery has a 7-13 overall lead and a 3-6 region mark. The RPI has been removed and will not be available until May 6, when the final rankings and bracket for the State Championships, which will begin on May 8 and 9, will be released.
Emery got on the board early with a Beau Stilson steal of home. The Spartans kept the Wildcats off the board in the bottom of the frame, and would add four more in the second inning that started with Hayden Christiansen drawing a walk to start. Trevin Gilbert came up to bat next and sent a double to right, driving in Christiansen. Easton Stoker sent a double to right and drove in Jace Frandsen and Gilbert. Later in the inning, Trygg Jensen sent a grounder to right, and Stoker would score, giving Emery the 5-0 lead.
Moving into the fifth, Emery added a trio of runs, starting with a Bronx Olsen single to right to drive in Christiansen. Stoker came back up to the plate, and during his at-bat, Frandsen stole second, and Gilbert scored on an error by the second baseman. Stilson sent a line drive to the shortstop, and reached on an error, and Frandesn would score, putting the Emery lead at 8-0. The Spartans added one more in the sixth, then held the Wildcats to just three runs to take the 9-3 win.
Gilbert went 3-3 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Stoker was 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Christiansen went 1-3 with two runs and one RBI in the win.
Hayden Abrams got the complete game win with three earned runs on three hits and struck out nine.
On Tuesday, the Spartans will travel to Price to face the Carbon Dinos for the first of two games this week.
