
The Emery soccer squad traveled to Herriman to play the Providence Hall Patriots in the opening round of the State Championships. The Spartans took the Patriots to overtime and won 4-3.
The Spartans ended the regular season 1-16 overall and 0-14 in Region 12. They sit in the No. 17 spot in the final RPI and faced the Petriots in the opening round of the playoffs.
Throughout the entire contest, both teams matched each other goal for goal. The first half ended in a 1-1 tie. Moving into the second half, the teams battled back and forth, not wanting their season to end. After regulation, both squads were tied at 3-3, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, both teams were still scoreless after the first 10-minute sudden victory period. In the second overtime period, Emery found the back of the net to take the 4-3 win and move on in the tournament.
Seth Winter, Payton Serman, and Kysler Kofford scored goals for the Spartans in the win.
Emery now faces the No.1 team in 3A, Ogden (14-0). The Tigers are the defending State Champions and have not lost a game since April 3 of last season.
The game with Ogden is set for Wednesday at 4:00 p.m..
