The Carbon Dino soccer team welcomed the North Sanpete Hawks to Price on Wednesday in the second round of the State Championships. This was the third time these two teams would face each other this season, and like the other meetings, Carbon earned the victory 1-0, to move on in the playoffs.
Carbon holds a 12-3 mark overall and sits in the No.3 spot in the final RPI, giving them an opening round bye. Carbon and North Sanpete had just faced each other last week, with the Dinos earning a 7-0 win.
The contest was a defensive battle, with the Dinos and the Hawks struggling to score. Parks Cowdell was able to break through North Sanpete’s defense to find the back of the net off the assist from Luke Brady. Cannon Mortensen was a wall in goal for Carbon as he collected his tenth shutout of the season.
Carbon will advance to take on the No. 6 Morgan Trojans on Saturday in Price.
Morgan lost to the eventual State Champion Ogden Tigers in the semi-finals last season and is sitting at 10-8 overall. The Trojans earned their trip to the quarterfinals after beating South Summit 8-0 on Wednesday.
With a win, the Dinos would advance to the semi-finals on May 8 at Zions Bank Stadium, where they would face the winner of the No. 2 Manti and No. 7 Juab match.
Game time against Morgan is set for 1:00 p.m. at the soccer field at Carbon High School.
