The Carbon High track and field team traveled to Brigham Young University last Friday to participate in the BYU Invitational. With the regular season winding down, this was just a primer for postseason competition. Out of over 50 teams in the girls division, the Lady Dinos earned a 16th place overall finish but took third among 3A Schools.
Carbon coach Jimmy Jewkes was recently a guest on KOAL’s Drivetime Sports and was asked if this meet, which included schools from 1A to 6A, is a good gauge of the team’s current standing heading into the postseason.
“It really is, because we go against some of the top competition, they’re not just going up against some of the top teams in Utah, they’re going up against some of the top teams in the western United States.”
Snow Canyon finished the meet in first with 69 points; Pine View was in second with 59. Union (39), Park City (32), Lone Peak (32), and Mountain Ridge (30) rounded out the top five. Carbon tied for 16th with Emmit High School out of Idaho with 14 points.
Roz Stowe earned fifth place in the 800 meters. Stowe has been slowly building up to the postseason, and according to Jewkes, she may be hitting her stride at the perfect time.
“We’ve been bringing her along a little bit different than we have in the past, and a lot of coaches have talked to me about it, and what we’re doing, but look out, because we’re right on schedule for her to have another breakthrough.”
The Lady Dino team of Brooklyn Lowe, Malia Smith, Gianna White, Stowe, and Emma Bowman blew away the field on their way to a new school record in the sprint medley relay with a time of 4:09.80, almost twenty seconds ahead of Riverton, which finished second.
While the boys’ team didn’t score any points, they still put in some great performances. Max Carlson turned in a personal best time of 50.01 in the 400 meters. Carter Branch finished tied for 18th in the high jump with a height of 6’1″. Branch and Andrew Loveless also had personal bests in the 300 hurdles.
Carbon is now ready to host the Region 12 Championship starting Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Thursday events will start at 11:00 a.m.
