
The Carbon tennis squad closed the regular season on April 26 at the Uintah Invitational. Postseason play began with the Region 12 Championships at North Sanpete, and then, on Thursday, the opening round of the 3A State Championships will start.
The opening round will be held at Brighton High School, where the field will be cut in half. The Championships will continue at Liberty Park in Salt Lake on Friday and Saturday.
Nicholas Bryner will get things going at 9:00 on Thursday. Bryner earned the No. 15 spot in first singles, and he will face No. 18 Cooper Potts from Grand County. The two have never faced each other this season. The winner of this match will face Diego Garrido of Judge Memorial on Friday.
In the second singles match, No. 12 Memphis Howell faces No. 21 Wyatt Keith of San Juan, with the winner squaring up with No. 5 Patrick Barnes of Juab. In the only match with Juab this season, Howell did not play Barnes, who played doubles during the meet.
Zander Carrillo, Carbon’s highest-ranked player at No.11 in third singles, will take on No. 22 William Seigel, with the winner facing No. 6 Ari Juluson of Richfield. Juluson defeated Carrillo in both of their meetings this season, a 4-0, 4-2 win in Price and 7-6(8-6), 7-5 on the road.
In first doubles, No. 17 Josiah Trostle and Oliver Steele will take on No. 16 Madsen Bergstrom and Lukus Peterson of Canyon View; the winner will take on the No. 1-ranked team of Sahil Shah and Preston Jenkins of the Waterford School.
In second doubles, Judson Varner and Carter Abbott are sitting at No. 13 and will take on the No. 20 team of Hunter Goble and Ethan Romaine from Gunnison Valley. The winner of this match will take on No. 4 Kai Patterson and Chance Vorhees of Judge Memorial.
The State Championships will conclude on Saturday.
