Runs were hard to come by on Thursday at the diamond at Carbon High School when the Dinos faced the North Sanpete Hawks. By the time the Hawks got on the board in the third, it was apparent this would be a low-scoring affair, and it was, as the Hawks took game one of the best-of-three series, 2-1.

Carbon ended the regular season with a 10-13 overall mark and is currently ranked No. 8. North Sanpete was also ranked 10-13 and is ranked No.9. The two teams split the season series this year.

If defensive baseball is your thing, this was the game for you. It took two full innings before either team could plate a run, and North Sanpete struck first, scoring in the top of the third, to take the 1-0 lead.

Carbon struggled with Hawks’ pitching, collecting only two hits, one of which was a home run from Paxton Falk’s bat, to cut into the North Sanpete lead, 2-1.

Both teams went silent again for the remainder of the contest, giving the Hawks the first win in this best-of-three series.

Falk was 1-3 with one RBI and a run for Carbon. Vigil had the other Dino hit a double in the bottom of the fourth.

Vigil also got the start on the mound, going 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out two. Falk came in, going 2.1 innings with no hits and no runs, and struck out one.

The two teams will square up again on Friday, with game two starting at 1:00 p.m. If Carbon wins, game three will follow; if the Dinos lose, their season will end.

You can follow the game live on KOAL 107.3 FM or 750 AM. The Landon’s Diesel Pre-game Show will begin at 12:50 p.m.
