002-21

Despite holding a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the No. 9 seed Carbon Lady Dinos were unable to hold off a furious Providence Hall comeback, falling 5-4 in a 3A State Tournament elimination game Thursday afternoon in Spanish Fork.

Providence Hall worked the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Hailey Lenz singled to right field, bringing the Patriots within one. Alysa Marcek ended the game with a walk-off ground rule double, scoring two runs and eliminating the Lady Dinos in the process.

Carbon held the lead throughout the first six innings, taking the lead early in the first inning. Kennlee Kennedy singled to center field, scoring Aleece Ardohain. Providence Hall answered back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game after one.

Kennedy once again gave the Lady Dinos the lead, this time launching a double to left field that scored Alexa Jones. Kennedy crossed the plate on the ensuing at bat as Brailee Peterson singled on a hard ground ball to center field.

Carbon remained in control and added to their advantage in the fourth inning. Sienna Alderson registered the team’s fourth RBI of the game with a triple to right field, bringing Lacie Gregersen across home plate.

After being blanked for four straight innings, Providence Hall took advantage of a Carbon error, getting its lead runner aboard in the sixth. With one out, a single brought the Patriots within two, setting the stage for the final inning.

Multiple errors in the field soured a solid pitching performance by Danica Adams. Going the full distance, Adams allowed five hits in the six innings on the mound. With only two earned runs, she fanned eight batters and issued only three walks.

Kennedy helped provide run support, finishing 2-3 with two RBI. Shayla Penovich ended 2-3 at the plate. Alderson also ended 2-3, ending with one RBI.

Thursday’s setback gives Carbon a final record of 13-16 overall on the season. The Lady Dinos end the state tournament with a 1-2 record.
