The Carbon tennis squad traveled to the State Championships, starting on Thursday, May 8, at Brighton High School and concluding on Friday and Saturday at Liberty Park. On Thursday, all members of the team won their opening-round matches, but their season came to an end on Friday. 

Starting in first singles, Nicholas Bryner earned a win over Grand County’s Cooper Potts, moving Bryner into the second day, facing Diego Garrido of Judge Memorial Catholic. It was a tough draw for Bryner, who fell 6-0 and 6-3. Garrido would go on to fall in the Championship round.

Memphis Howell squared up in second singles with Wyatt Keith from San Juan. Howell handled business in straight sets 6-3 and 6-0. He faced Patrick Barnes of Juab in the next round and fell 6-0, 6-2. 

In third singles, Zander Carrillo, who earned the highest seed for Carbon with No. 11, the opening round pitted him against No. 22 Wil Siegel of Juan Diego, a match the Carrillo would win going away, 6-0 and 6-2. In the round of 16 on Friday, he faced Ari Juluson of Richfield, and the Wildcat came away with the victory. 

The first double team, Josiah Trostle and Oliver Steele, faced Madsen Bergstrom and Lukus Peterson of Canyon View. The Carbon duo had to go three sets but won 6-2, 6-7, and 7-5. On day two, they faced Sahil Shah and Preston Jenkins of the Waterford School, losing in straight sets to the eventual State Champions 6-1 and 6-0.

Judson Varner and Carter Abbott faced off with Hunter Goble and Ethan Romaine from Gunnison Valley, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win. On Friday, they faced Kai Patterson and Chance Vorhees of Judge Memorial. They lost in the first set 6-0 but put up a bit of a fight in set number two, falling 6-4 to the pair from Judge, who went on to earn a State Championship. 

The Waterford School took first place in the team competition, scoring 53 points; Rowland Hall finished in second with 52. Judge Memorial (35), Ogden (27), and Juan Diego (19) rounded out the top five. Carbon finished in 13th out of 22 teams that competed.
