The Carbon Dino track and field squad travels to the campus of Brigham Young University on Friday and Saturday. It has been an excellent season for the program with plenty of personal and school records broken,
The spring sports season looks pretty condensed, but it did begin on March 8 in Moab at the Red Rock Invite, which now seems so long ago. Last time they were on the track was at the Region 12 Championships in Price, where the Lady Dinos claimed a second-place finish and the boys took third.
Carbon coach Jimmy Jewkes joined KOAL’s Drive Time Sports to discuss who to watch out for and to say goodbye to a great senior class.
The Lady Dinos have had a successful 2025 season and are looking to capitalize on that this weekend. Senior Gianna White could walk away with three state championships. She had great showings in the 400 this season and even claimed the region title, but White has been part of some very successful relay teams this season.
“Gianna is a hard-working kid. We’ve had her for four solid years; she’s been a part of a couple of school record-breaking relays, and she was a part of the medley team that took state two years ago. Her number one goal is to just run the times and be there for her teammates.”
Roz Stowe is another one to watch out for, capturing the region title in the 800-meter. Stowe is scheduled to run in the 800 and the 1600 as well as the sprint medley relay. The team of Gianna White, Brooklyn Lowe, Malia Smith, and Stowe not only earned a regional title but is ranked as the No.1 team in 3A.
“We’ve been loading Roz a little bit different this year,” Jewkes said. “We’ve talked a little bit on past radio shows about bringing her along a little slower this year, making sure we don’t reinjure the foot, and really just having her trust the process, and it’s coming along really well.”
Bradley Sweeney may be a member of the boys’ team to keep an eye on after his performance, taking a regional title in the 300-meter hurdles.
“I think we were all blown away at Bradley Sweeney. I think that was the shock of the meet. I don’t think anybody expected him to go win the 300 region title, when he came down and he won it, it was awesome.”
Max Carlson has come alive at the right time with a title in the 400 at the region tournament.
“Max has one of the fastest times in the state. We weren’t surprised that he won that because he’s been doing that all year.”
Field events are going to come into play as well for Carbon. Carter Branch and Traxton Jewkes have been battling back and forth, pushing each other in the high jump. Branch is one to look at in the hurdles and has been the top point scorer for the Dinos this season.
“Carter Branch is coming along really well; Carter is doing a good job over there in the high jump, it’s kind of interesting to watch the duel between those two (Branch and Jewkes), they get really competitive. Either one of those two on a bad weather day, they’re both right there, they’ve just got to put it together at state.”
Many student athletes are hitting their stride at the perfect time and have been hitting their personal best later in the season, which is exactly what the coaching staff has been looking for.
As it is the final meet of the season, Coach Jewkes looked back at how long he had worked with some of these athletes in what would be their final high school track and field event.
“I’ll be honest, there’s a lot of these kids that I’ve coached for four years. Becca Swasey is one of them, Gianna is one of them, my own son Traxton, I can’t believe that my time with him is going to be done, and you look at kids like Max Carlson, Bradley Sweeney, I’ve coached him for a long time. That group of Traxton, and Bradley, and Gianna they competed at Helper Middle School, so I’ve seen them for longer than four years, so it’s kind of sweet to see these kids move on to that next stage in life, but it’s sad at the same time. I mean this group of kids are going to do a lot of amazing things not just on the track but in life.”
Check back with Castle Country Radio starting Friday for the latest updates as soon as we have them from the 3A State Championships.
