013-24

The Carbon boys’ soccer team closed the 2025 campaign on May 3 in a shootout loss to the Morgan Trojans. The Dinos put together a 12-4 overall season and finished second in Region 12 play with an 11-3 mark.  A central bright spot for the Dinos was Cannon Mortensen in goal, who collected a school record ten shutouts.

Below is a recap of the 2025 season.

March 5, vs. Emery

A rivalry showdown opened the soccer season for the Carbon Dinos and Emery Spartans, as the two squads took the pitch on Wednesday, March 6. It was all gas and no brakes for the Dinos, putting up five of their seven goals in the first half as they cruised to a 7-0 shutout victory.

The game’s story was a five-goal first half, as Carbon overpowered the Spartans early with unrelenting pressure. The Dinos added two more in the second half to dominate the matchup 7-0.

Luke Brady led Carbon’s attack, scoring a hat trick. Tyler Morris added two goals, and Case Griffith and Logan McEvoy each added one. Morris was also credited with two assists. Tayger Timothy and Donavyn Prescott showed off some passing prowess, each getting an assist of their own.

Cannon Mortensen came away with the shutout in the goal, anchoring a stifling defense and ending the afternoon with two saves.

March 7, @ Canyon View

The Carbon High soccer team was back on the pitch on Friday in Cedar City for another Region 12 match against Canyon View. The Dinos picked up where they left off the last time out, earning a shutout win 3-0.

Opening the season with a win over Emery 7-0, the Dinos faced Canyon View for the first of their two meetings. Last year in the two meetings, Carbon came away with a pair of victories.

The Dinos displayed their offense and defense in the match with the Falcons. They scored one goal in the first half and defensively held Canyon View scoreless, taking a 1-0 lead to the locker room.

In the second half, the Dino charge continued scoring a pair of goals, and with Cannon Mortensen between the pipes, Carbon cruised to a 3-0 region win to move to 2-0 this season.

Dayton King scored a pair of goals for the Dinos. Logan McEvoy had a goal and an assist, while Case Griffeth and Luke Brady each logged an assist, and Mortensen earned his second shutout of the season in the win.

March 12, @ North Sanpete

Carbon Dino boys’ soccer was on the road on Wednesday in Mt. Pleasant for a region contest against North Sanpete. Carbon has been playing fantastically this season, which continued against the Hawks with a 3-0 win, moving to 3-0. The Dinos have yet to allow a goal this season.

The Dinos started the season with a big win over Emery 7-0 and followed up with another region win over Canyon View 3-0. Wednesday, they took on the North Sanpete Hawks, whom they were able to defeat in both of their meetings last season.

The first half was all about the Dinos, as they were able to connect with the back of the net twice. Defensively, they kept the Hawks scoreless and went into halftime up 2-0.

In the final half, Carbon focused on keeping everything in front of them, turning back the Hawks at every scoring opportunity. They added one more goal, going up 3-0, and registered another shutout this season in the victory.

Tyler Morris collected two goals for Carbon. Luke Brady had a goal and an assist, Drake Chappell had another assist, and Cannon Mortenson earned his third shutout to start the season.

March 14, vs. Juab

The Carbon Dinos continue to stack wins, running their win streak to four to open the season with another convincing win, this time topping the Juab Wasps 4-1 Friday afternoon in Price.

Tied 1-1 at the end of the first half, the Dinos outscored the Wasps 3-0 over the final 40 minutes of play to remain unbeaten.

In the region win, Luke Brady found the back of the net twice, running his season total to six. Dayton King also scored two goals and registered one assist.

Friday’s win gives Carbon one of the best starts in program history. The team has accumulated four wins, outscoring opponents 17-1.

March 19, @ Delta

Wednesday afternoon, the Carbon Dino soccer team put their unbeaten record on the line when they welcomed the Delta Rabbits. The Dinos added four in the first and four in the second to take the 8-0 Region 12 win.

Carbon has now outscored its opponents 25-1 in five games. The lone goal came against the Juab Wasps last week, but Carbon has been unstoppable when Cannon Mortenson has been in between the pipes.

The Dinos were on the offensive from the start, scoring four goals in the first half and holding the Rabbits scoreless by halftime.

The second half was all about the Dinos once again. Carbon found the back of the net four more times, and Mortenson’s steady hands in goal made it easy for the Dinos to earn their fifth win this season.

Tyler Morris scored two goals and had three assists for Carbon. Parks Cowdell, Lincoln Atwood, Donavyn Prescott, Logan McEvoy, Drake Chappell, and Luke Brady each scored a goal. Chapell and Case Griffieth added an assist, and Mortenson logged his fourth shutout of the season.

March 21, @ Richfield

The Carbon boys’ soccer team has strung together six wins to open the season. The defense has got them to this point, and on Friday, it was on display again as the Dinos registered their fifth shutout of the season, taking a 3-0 win over the Richfield Wildcats.

The Dinos have outscored their opponent 28-1 this season with senior Cannon Mortensen between the pipes, as he has earned five shutouts. Carbon sits at 6-0 overall this season, and we will find out how they rank against the rest of 3A on April 4, when the initial RPI is released.

Carbon was ready to get back to the pitch and face the Wildcats. The Dinos could find the back of the net once in the first half. They came back in the second half, added another pair of goals, and kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard, taking the 3-0 win.

Sam Dart and Tyler Morris scored a goal, and Logan McEvoy had one goal and one assist. Mirza Atkas earned an assist in the win. Mortensen logged his fifth shutout of the season.

March 26, vs. Manti

Last season, the Carbon Dino boys’ soccer squad lost three games, two of them to the Manti Templars. On Wednesday in Price, they were looking to break that streak, and for one half, they looked like they might pull it off, but the Templars scored one goal in the second half, taking a 1- 0 victory, handing the Dinos their first loss of the season.

Manti has been a thorn in Carbon’s side on the soccer field for quite some time. Even though they haven’t played regularly except for the past few years, the Dinos have never beaten the Templars; the closest they have gotten was a tie in 2012. Last year, they lost both regular-season meetings and want to change that.

Carbon and Manti came out looking for an edge, but neither team got one. They went to halftime tied at 0-0. In the second half, things were progressing about the same, but Manti was able to find the back of the net once, and that was enough as they held the Dinos scoreless to take the 1-0 win.

March 28, @ Emery

On Friday, the Spartan soccer team welcomed the Carbon Dinos to Castle Dale for the second and final region meeting between the two teams in the regular season. Emery is still searching for their first league win, and unfortunately, Carbon took the contest, 7-0.

Emery has collected one win this season over Millard at a tournament in St. George. Having played all teams once, they begin battling through the second half of region play. Emery sits at 1-9 overall and 0-8 in conference play.

Carbon jumped out early in the contest, scoring five goals in the first half and taking a 5-0 lead at halftime. The Spartans regrouped for the second half but could not crack the Dinos’ defense, as Carbon added two more in the second half to take the 7-0 win.

Luke Brady scored four goals for the Dinos, and Tyler Morris and Logan McEvoy each added one goal and two assists. Lincoln Atwood added a goal, and Mason Engar added one assist in the Carbon win. Cannon Mortensen earned his sixth shutout of the season as well.

April 2, vs. Canyon View

On Wednesday, the Dinos welcomed the Canyon View Falcons to Price for their second and final regular-season meeting. Carbon earned a season sweep of the Falcons with the 4-1 win, moving them to 8-1 this season.

Carbon holds an 8-1 overall record, and on Friday, the Utah High School Activities Association will release the first RPI of the season. These rankings will be updated throughout the rest of the season and used for seeding teams when the State Championships begin on April 25.

Both teams were looking for a win, and each found the back of the net once in the first half as the two teams went to halftime tied at 1-1. In the second half, Carbon would get more aggressive and break down the Falcons’ defense, scoring three goals in the half to hand Canyon View their third loss of the season, 4-1.

Mirza Atkas led the Dinos with two goals. Tyler Morris and Sam Dart each had a goal and an assist in the win.

April 9, @ Juab

On Wednesday, the Carbon boys’ soccer team was on the road in Nephi to take on the Juab Wasps. The Dinos had beaten the Wasps earlier in the season and were looking for the sweep, but Juab had other plans, handing Carbon their second loss, 1-0.

Carbon is 8-2 overall and in Region 12 play, second behind Manti. The Templars also leapfrogged the Dinos to take the No. 2 spot in the latest RPI, with Carbon now resting at No. 3 with four matches left to go.

Carbon struggled on offense, as they could not find the back of the net, being shut out for the second time this season. The Dinos held Juab off the scoreboard in the first half, but in the second half, the Wasps found a hole in the Carbon defense to score one and take the 1-0 win.

April 11, vs. Delta

Cannon Mortensen posted his record-breaking seventh shutout this season in the 7-0 Dinos win over the Delta Rabbits, moving Carbon to 9-2 overall.

Mortensen has waited since March 28, when Carbon shut out the Emery Spartans. Since then, they have given up one goal to the Canyon View Falcons and lost in their match to the Juab Wasps.

The Dinos still rank second in Region 12 with a 9-2 record and hold the No. 3 spot in the latest RPI ranking.

Carbon scored three goals in the first half, keeping the Rabbits at bay by keeping them off the scoreboard. They repeated their performance in the second half, adding four more to close out Delta and take the 7-0 win.

Luke Brady scored three goals and had an assist for Carbon. Logan McEvoy scored two goals and registered two assists, Lincoln Atwood, Mirza Atkas, and Tayger Timothy each scored a goal in the win. Case Griffeth and Parks Cowdell each added an assist. Mortensen added an assist to go with his seventh shutout.

April 16, vs. Richfield

The Dinos collected another win on Wednesday when the Richfield Wildcats came to town. The first half was all defense, as neither team could get on the scoreboard, but in the second half, Carbon went off, scoring four goals, and the Dinos won 4-0.

Carbon moves to 10-2 overall this season and climbs up one spot to No. 2 in the latest RPI, with two games left.

Both teams played scoreless in the first half of the contest. In the second half, Carbon came alive offensively, scoring four goals. With Cannon Mortensen in goal, he kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard to take the 4-0 win.

Tyler Morris collected two goals for Carbon. Tayger Timothy and Donavyn Prescott each scored goals. Logan McEvoy and Luke Brady each had assists in the win.

April 18, @ Manti

The Dino soccer team was looking for that elusive win over the Manti Templars on the road Friday. Both teams sit atop the Region 12 standings, with the Templars having a slight edge. On Friday, Carbon could hold Manti off the board in the first half, but the Templars broke the Dino defense, finding the back of the net twice, taking a 2-0 win.

Carbon holds a 10-3 mark this season and was looking to crack the Templar code. On March 26, Manti came to Price and earned a 1-0 victory, and in recent memory, the Dinos have been able to put one in the win column against Manti. The season will close on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, the final RPI will be released along with the bracket for the State Championships, which start on Friday.

Both teams were able to keep each other off the scoreboard in the first half, as neither could find holes in the other’s defense. The teams went to halftime tied 0-0. Manti found its way around Carbon in the second half and sent two into the back of the net to take the 2-0 win.

April 22, vs. North Sanpete

Carbon boys’ soccer closed out the regular season on Tuesday on the road in Mount Pleasant, taking on the North Sanpete Hawks. The Dinos approached this contest like every other this season and came away with a win, 6-0, giving Cannon Mortensen his school record ninth shut-out of the season.

On Wednesday morning, the Utah High School Activities Association released the final RPI of the season, with the Ogden Tigers sitting in the top spot at a perfect 14-0. Region 12 was represented well, with three teams in the top five: Manti ended in second, Carbon landed in third, and Canyon View landed in fourth. Ben Lomond rounded out the top five.  Carbon will start the postseason on April 30 when they will face the North Sanpete Hawks at home.

Carbon was all business in this one, coming out in the first half and adding four goals to take the 4-0 at the half. The Dinos found the back of the net twice more in the second to earn the 6-0 win.

Luke Brady earned a hat trick, scoring three goals for Carbon. Lincoln Atwood had two goals and an assist, Case Griffeth had a goal and an assist, and Donavyn Prescott and Logan McEvoy each had an assist in the win. Cannon Mortensen earned his ninth shutout this season.

April 30, vs. North Sanpete- Second round of the State Championships

The Carbon Dino soccer team welcomed the North Sanpete Hawks to Price on Wednesday in the second round of the State Championships. This was the third time these two teams would face each other this season, and like the other meetings, Carbon earned the victory 1-0, to move on in the playoffs.

Carbon holds a 12-3 mark overall and sits in the No.3 spot in the final RPI, giving them an opening round bye. Carbon and North Sanpete had just faced each other last week, with the Dinos earning a 7-0 win.

The contest was a defensive battle, with the Dinos and the Hawks struggling to score. Parks Cowdell broke through North Sanpete’s defense to find the back of the net off the assist from Luke Brady. Cannon Mortensen was a wall in goal for Carbon as he collected his tenth shutout of the season.

May 3, vs. Morgan- State Championship Quarterfinals

A historic season on the soccer field ended for the Carbon Dinos on Saturday afternoon in Price, after losing a heartbreaking shootout to the Morgan Trojans in the quarterfinals of the 3A state tournament.

The back-and-forth battle between the No. 3 Dinos and No. 6 Trojans lived up to the billing as the two teams were tied after each period. Two overtimes could not decide a winner, forcing the shootout, which ended in Morgan’s favor 4-1.

Both teams found the back of the net early in the game. Morgan jumped out to an early lead as Luke Francis scored on an assist from Trace Henderson. Carbon’s Luke Brady delivered the equalizer on a pass from Parks Cowdell.

The score remained locked in a 1-1 tie entering the second half. Neither defense gave an inch as both teams were scoreless throughout the remainder of regulation. With no scores in two overtimes, the game went to penalty kicks, setting the stage for the Morgan win.

Saturday’s loss ends one of the most successful seasons in Carbon High School’s history. The Dinos entered the state tournament as the No. 3 seed after finishing second in the highly competitive Region 12 division with an 11-3 mark.

Carbon set a team record for most goals scored in a season with 58. Individually, senior Cannon Mortensen set a single-season record for shutouts at goalkeeper with 10.

Congratulations to the 2025 Carbon Dino Boys’ Soccer team.
