Memorial Day is upon us, giving residents of the Castle Country and beyond the opportunity to reflect on and pay respects to the men and women who have sacrificed so much to protect our country. The Price American Legion post will take a speaking tour across the county on Memorial Day to honor these men and women.
Post Commander Kelly Madsen joined the KOAL Newsroom to discuss this tour and an upcoming flag retirement ceremony to commemorate flag day in June.
“We will start at Helper Cemetery on May 26 at 8 a.m. And then we will move to the Price Cemetery at 9 a.m., Cliffview at 9:30 a.m., Wellington at 10:30 a.m. and out in East Carbon at 11:30 a.m.,” explained Madsen. “I would like to encourage everybody to come out and watch the program that we have devised. We will honor the veterans with the rifles and the playing of taps.”
Leading up to this event, the Post will place flags on the graves of veterans on Thursday, May 22. Due to the enormous workload this undertaking will require, the American Legion is inviting the community to aid in the project. “We try to put out flags in every cemetery for every veteran out there. If anybody would like to come out and help do that, we will be starting at Price Cemetery at 8:30 a.m., and it’s quite a bit of an undertaking to get this done. But we would love to have anybody come out.”
Looking ahead, Madsen spoke about the Legion’s flag retirement ceremony on June 14. “If anybody has any flags that need to be retired, they can either be taken to the courthouse, or, if you know anybody in the Legion, they can be dropped off with any one of us and we will take care of them. There will also be a nice little program that day.”
Madsen also explained how veterans in the community can get involved with the American Legion. “Give us a call at 630-8474.”
In closing, Madsen shared,” We would love to see as many people come out as possible. Come out and enjoy yourselves.”
The American Legion Memorial Day services will start at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 26.
