The Carbon boys’ tennis squad’s season ended at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City on May 9 and 10, during the 3A State Championships. Carbon had a very young team this year, with just three seniors participating in the campaign. The Dions earned a 13th-place finish out of 22 teams that competed.

Below is a recap of the 2025 season.

March 5- @ South Sevier

In the first singles match, Carbon’s Nicholas Bryner lost the first set 6-2 to South Sevier’s Logan Bergfeld. The second set was a bit more competitive, but Bryner also lost that one 6-4.

The second singles match was evenly matched, as Memphis Howell took on Britton Johnson. The match went three sets, with Johnson winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Zander Carrillo also battled in his third singles match with Carson Blackburn, going three sets. He won the first 6-3 but fell in set two 7-5 and lost in a tie break in the third 6-6 (7-5).

The first doubles match saw Josiah Trostle and Judson Varner take on Eli Dopp and Lincoln Hansen. The two teams went toe-to-toe in set one with the duo from South Sevier earning a 6-6 (9-7) win in the first set and a 6-2 win in set number two.

In second doubles, Carter Abbott and Oliver Steele fell to Joel Cefalia and Kesi Manning in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.

March 12- vs. Manti

The Price tennis courts were busy on Wednesday, as the Manti Templars were in town for the Dinos’ home opener. Coming off a 5-0 loss on the road at South Sevier, the Dinos’ home court advantage paid off, as they earned a 4-2 win.

Carbon gathered wins in all singles matches with Nicholas Bryner getting a straight set victory over Manti’s Coby Rasmussen 6-3, 6-2. Memphis Howell earned a straight set win over Kannon Christiansen 6-1, 6-3, and Zander Carrillo defeated Evan Lambourne 6-2 and  6-0.

The Dinos suffered tough losses in the doubles matches. Josiah Trostle and Judson Varner fell to Stanley Crouch and Kinston Sorenson 7-5 and 6-1, and Sylvian Gurule and Oliver Steele lost their first set in a tie breaker, 7-6 (7-2), and the second set, 6-1, to Jarom Smith and Micah Butler.

March 14 & 15- Carbon Invitational

The Carbon Invitational took place last weekend, with six schools from across the region coming to Price for two days of competition.  The Dinos went 2-3 in the tournament, finishing in fourth place.

Uintah claimed first place, followed by Richfield. Union, Carbon, Delta, and Gunnison Valley comprised the remainder of the field.

In the first matches of the day, Carbon faced the Union Cougars. The only match wins came from Memphis Howell in the second singles, going between 4-3 (7-4) and 4-3 (7-4).  Zander Carrillo made it through his third singles match 4-2, 4-2.

The matches with Uintah were a struggle, with Carbon coming up empty 5-0. Howell had a hard-fought game against Issac Abrams, going three sets in the loss 4- 0, 3- 4 (2-7), 0-0 (10-2).

It was a perfect sweep in the matches against Delta as Carbon earned the 5-0 match win. Nicholas Bryner, Howell, and Carrillo earned straight-set victories in the singles matches. In the doubles matches, Judson Varner and Josiah Trostle in first doubles took a 4-2, 1-4, 0-0 (10-6), and in second doubles, Oliver Steele and Sylvian Gurule took three sets as well, 4-2, 2-4, 0-0 (10-5).

Next up was Gunnison Valley, and the Dinos would take another team win, 3-2. This time, Carrillo took a straight-set win 4-1,4-1 over Lucas Nielson. The first (Varner and Trostle) and the second (Steele and Gurule) doubles teams each claimed straight-set victories.

The Dinos squared off with Region 12 member Richfield in the weekend’s final match. The Dinos could not collect a match win, falling 5-0. The second doubles match had Steele and Gurule up against Luke Woolsey and Onyx Davis, and although it was a loss, it was a battle that went three sets: 2-4, 4-0, 0-0 (10-4).

March 19- vs. South Sevier

On March 5, the Carbon tennis team traveled to Monroe to face the South Sevier Rams. On that day, the Dinos suffered a 5-0 loss. Wednesday, Carbon managed one win but still was handed another loss, 4-1.

Coming off a fourth-place finish at the Carbon Invitational, the Dinos were scheduled to welcome the North Sanpete Hawks to Price on Tuesday, but will now face them on Friday in Price.

The Dinos’ only match win came in the third singles match, when Zander Carrillo beat South Sevier’s Carson Blackburn in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4.

The first doubles match was a tough fight for Josiah Trostle and Judson Varner. Taking a loss in three sets: 1-6, 6-4, and 6-3.

March 21- vs. North Sanpete

Carbon finally welcomed North Sanpete to Price in a scheduled match on Tuesday. The Dinos won four out of five games to win 4-1.

The weather on Tuesday caused problems for all sporting events in Carbon and Emery counties, and all games needed to be rescheduled. The match with North Sanpete was moved to Friday.

Carbon won all three singles matches quickly. Nicholas Bryner won 6-1 and 6-2. Memphis Howell won 6-4 and 6-2 in second singles, and Zander Carrillo’s third singles match against Kaden Cox was a straight-set win 6-1, 6-4.

Carbon’s Judson Varner and Carter Abbott struggled in doubles, losing 6-0 and 6-3. The first set in the second doubles match of Rylen Hatch and Oliver Steele was a dogfight, but they earned a 7-5 win and then came back and took a 6-4 win in the second set.

April 8- vs. Canyon View

Carbon returned to the tennis court on Tuesday for the first time since March 21. The Canyon View Falcons came to Price, and the Dinos could only manage two wins, falling 4-2.

Carbon has a 4-6 overall record and is 2-1 in region play. The Dinos have four matches left. Then, they will travel to Vernal for the two-day Uintah Invitational before the Region 12 Tournament in Mount Pleasant on April 30.

Nicholas Bryner won in his first singles match against Canyon View’s Seth Morris. The only other Carbon win came in second doubles when Carter Abbott and Oliver Steele went the distance, taking the win in three sets over Jack Pace and Randy Dexter, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, and 7-6 (7-5).

April 9- @ Delta

The Carbon boys’ tennis squad traveled to Delta on Wednesday to face the Rabbits. The Dinos won five matches to earn a 5-1 region win.

The season is winding down, as Carbon has just three non-tournament matches left: at Juab, at Richfield, and home for Union. They will participate in the two-day Uintah Invitational in Vernal before the Region 12 tournament at North Sanpete on April 30.

Nicholas Bryner won his first singles match against Isaac Willoughby in straight sets after a tough first-set win 7-6 (7-2); he cruised in taking the second set 6-2. Memphis Howell won his match against Jaren Dekker 6-2, 6-1, and Zander Carrillo defeated Thomas Nay 6-0, 6-0.

Judson Varner and Josiah Trostle earned a hard-fought win in their first doubles match over Dylan  Moody and John Covey. After dropping the first set 4-6, they returned, winning the next two 6-2 and 6-4. Rylen Hatch and Sylvian Gurule earned a three-set win over Ryan Tolbert and Ryley Dutson, 5- 7, 6-3, and 6-3.

April 15- @ Juab

On Tuesday, the Carbon boys’ tennis squad traveled to Nephi to face the Juab Wasps. Juab has only lost two matches all season, and even though Carbon lost the contest 4-2, they were the most by any 3A team against the Wasps.

Carbon has a 5-7 overall record and is 3-2 in region play. They have just two matches left in the regular season. Then, they will participate in the Uintah Invitational before the Region 12 tournament. Juab’s only losses were against a team from 5A and 6A.

The two wins came from three-set matches in the first and third singles. Nicholas Bryner took three sets over Joel Covington, taking a win in set one 6-4 but falling in set two 6-2. After regrouping, Bryner returned and won a marathon match 7-6 (7-4).  In third singles,  Zander Carrillo defeated Mason Allred in three sets, 6-0, 1-6, and 6-4.

April 22- @ Richfield

The Dino tennis team was back on the court on Tuesday in Richfield, playing the Wildcats in a Region 12 matchup. Even though they still have a couple of events left on the schedule, this was Carbon’s final conference meeting of the season. Richfield would control all matches except for the second singles, where Carter Abbott and Oliver Steele pulled out the victory, but the Wildcats won the meet, 5-1.

Carbon lost all three matches in singles competition, with Nicholas Bryner, Memphis Howell, and Zander Carrillo taking straight-set losses. Carrillo in third singles had a battle on his hands, though falling in the first set 7-6 (8-6), and then again in set two, falling 7-5.

Abbott and Steele won in their second doubles match over Dylan Barclay and Onyx Davis 6-4 and 7-6 (7-3).

April 25 & 26- Uintah Invitational

The Carbon boys’ tennis team traveled to Vernal on Friday and Saturday for the Uintah Invitational. Six different schools participated in the tournament. Playing against five schools in two days, Carbon finished with a 1-4 record.

Carbon was coming off a 5-0 win over Union on Wednesday and would face them again in the tournament. This marked the final regular-season match for the Dinos, who will participate in the Region 12 Championships on April 30.

In the weekend’s first match, the Dinos faced the Morgan Trojans. In first singles, Nicholas Bryner earned Carbon’s only win over Treyson Ordyna, 9-8 (7-4). Alta was next, and Carbon suffered a 4-0 loss in matches with the Hawks.  Carbon closed out day one with a 3-1 victory over Union. For Carbon, Memphis Howell earned a win over the Cougars’ Zayde Tanner 8-4. Josiah Trostle and Oliver Steele won over Kevin and Micah Winterton, 8-4. And in second doubles, Judson Varner and Sylvian Gurule claimed the win over Aston Bennett and James Potter.

Carbon started day two, taking on the Logan Grizzlies. Carbon was unable to collect a win across four matches.  The Dinos would suffer the same fate in their final matches of the day, taking on the host Uintah Utes, and taking losses in all matches.

May 7-  Carbon boys’ tennis prepares for the 3A State Championships

The Carbon tennis squad closed the regular season on April 26 at the Uintah Invitational. Postseason play began with the Region 12 Championships at North Sanpete, and then, on Thursday, the opening round of the 3A State Championships will start.

The opening round will be held at Brighton High School, where the field will be cut in half. The Championships will continue at Liberty Park in Salt Lake on Friday and Saturday.

Nicholas Bryner will get things going at 9:00 on Thursday. Bryner earned the No. 15 spot in first singles and will face No. 18 Cooper Potts from Grand County. The two have never faced each other this season.  The winner of this match will face Diego Garrido of Judge Memorial on Friday.

In the second singles match, No. 12 Memphis Howell faces No. 21 Wyatt Keith of San Juan, with the winner squaring up with No. 5 Patrick Barnes of Juab. In the only match with Juab this season, Howell did not play Barnes, who played doubles during the meet.

Zander Carrillo, Carbon’s highest-ranked player at No.11 in third singles, will take on No. 22 William Seigel, with the winner facing No. 6 Ari Juluson of Richfield. Juluson defeated Carrillo in both of their meetings this season, a 4-0, 4-2 win in Price and  7-6(8-6), 7-5 on the road.

In first doubles, No. 17 Josiah Trostle and Oliver Steele will face No. 16 Madsen Bergstrom and Lukus Peterson of Canyon View; the winner will face the No. 1-ranked team of Sahil Shah and Preston Jenkins of the Waterford School.

In second doubles, Judson Varner and Carter Abbott are sitting at No. 13 and will take on the No. 20 team of Hunter Goble and Ethan Romaine from Gunnison Valley. The winner of this match will take on No. 4 Kai Patterson and Chance Vorhees of Judge Memorial.

May 9 & 10- State Championships

The Carbon tennis squad traveled to the State Championships, starting on Thursday, May 8, at Brighton High School and concluding on Friday and Saturday at Liberty Park. On Thursday, all members of the team won their opening-round matches, but their season came to an end on Friday. 

Starting in first singles, Nicholas Bryner earned a win over Grand County’s Cooper Potts, moving Bryner into the second day, facing Diego Garrido of Judge Memorial Catholic. It was a tough draw for Bryner, who fell 6-0 and 6-3. Garrido would go on to fall in the Championship round.

Memphis Howell squared up in second singles with Wyatt Keith from San Juan. Howell handled business in straight sets 6-3 and 6-0. He faced Patrick Barnes of Juab in the next round and fell 6-0, 6-2. 

In third singles, Zander Carrillo, who earned the highest seed for Carbon with No. 11, the opening round pitted him against No. 22 Wil Siegel of Juan Diego, a match the Carrillo would win going away, 6-0 and 6-2. In the round of 16 on Friday, he faced Ari Juluson of Richfield, and the Wildcat came away with the victory. 

The first double team, Josiah Trostle and Oliver Steele, faced Madsen Bergstrom and Lukus Peterson of Canyon View. The Carbon duo had to go three sets but won 6-2, 6-7, and 7-5. On day two, they faced Sahil Shah and Preston Jenkins of the Waterford School, losing in straight sets to the eventual State Champions 6-1 and 6-0.

Judson Varner and Carter Abbott faced off with Hunter Goble and Ethan Romaine from Gunnison Valley, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win. On Friday, they faced Kai Patterson and Chance Vorhees of Judge Memorial. They lost in the first set 6-0 but put up a fight in set number two, falling 6-4 to the pair from Judge, who went on to earn a State Championship. 

The Waterford School took first place in the team competition, scoring 53 points; Rowland Hall finished in second with 52. Judge Memorial (35), Ogden (27), and Juan Diego (19) rounded out the top five. Carbon finished in 13th out of 22 teams that competed.
