The Dinos’ campaign ended on May 9th with their second loss to North Sanpete in Super Regionals. Carbon closed the season at 10-15 overall and 8-6 in a challenging Region 12. Canyon View earned the State Championship by winning their series against Juab, both members of Carbon’s conference.

Head coach Rob Smith stopped by to talk to KOAL’s Drive Time Sports about working with this group of players.

“You hope the best for the kids, and you hope they get to play at the state tournament. That’s the ultimate goal going into the season. Talking with them it’s a learning experience. Was there things we could do differently for them? Yes. Is there things they could do differently? Yes. That’s hindsight; it will always be with baseball. The great thing about it is, I hope from my side, that we were able to teach these kids something that they can use in their lives.”

Smith also knows what he is looking for when it comes to the program next season.

“Work ethic and accountability. We all make mistakes. As a coach, yeah, I’ve made a lot of mistakes as a coach, that’s something I can learn from, and the biggest thing is being accountable for it, making a change, and growing from it. Hopefully, the kids can see that, that we’re doing that as a coaching staff, and they can buy into that as well and be accountable with their work ethic throughout the summer. Not just hey, I worked out once or twice a week, hopefully they’ll buy in and work out every day. Huge thing if they’re accountable to themselves for that, and it would be a huge thing for the program.”

Below is a recap of the 2025 season.

March 3- vs. Grand

On Monday, the long offseason ended for the Carbon baseball team when they welcomed the Grand Red Devils to Price. They played on through the snow, but the Red Devils came away with the 16-2 victory.

Coming off losses to Grand County and Uintah, the Dinos were searching for their first win of the 2025 season.

The contest with ALA got off to a quiet start. It remained scoreless until the top of the fourth, when Tyrus Madsen worked his way into a full count and sent a ground ball to left field, driving in Jakson Bosone. In the next at bat Paxton Falk hit a grounder toward third base and would reach on an error, scoring Madsen. March 14 & 15- St. George Tournament

The Carbon Dinos wrapped up a busy weekend with a 1-3 record. The team traveled to Pine View High School to play four games in two days in St. George.

Playing two doubleheaders in as many days, the Dinos started the weekend 0-2 with losses to Murray and Pine View on Friday. The team lost their third consecutive game to Stansbury on Saturday but finished the weekend with a win against Grantsville, bringing their overall record to 2-6.

“We grew a lot as a team this weekend,” said manager Rob Smith. “We are starting to figure out our identity as a team going into region play.”

A pitcher’s duel after the second inning produced four consecutive scoreless innings as the Dinos suffered a slim 6-4 loss to the 5A Murray Spartans to open the weekend.

Murray opened the game with four runs in the top half of the opening inning, but the Dinos responded by chopping the deficit to one entering the second frame. Murray’s bats remained hot as they added two more runs to capture a 6-3 lead. Carbon added one more in the bottom half of the second but could not get any closer.

Maddex Willson was tagged with the loss on the mound as he pitched one inning in the loss. Logan Madrigal pitched the second inning, while Trevor Williams closed the game with four scoreless innings.

As a team, the Dinos recorded six hits and logged four walks. With several opportunities on the bases, Carbon stranded eight runners.

Logan Bennett and Mike Vigil finished 1-4 at the plate, registering one RBI each. Paxton Falk and Vigil logged an extra base hit, both smacking doubles.

Errors plagued the Dinos in the second game of Friday’s schedule in the most lopsided affair of the weekend, falling to the Pine View Panthers 16-0 in four innings.

Senior Rydge Butler recorded the team’s lone hit with a single.

The Dinos returned to the field Saturday morning for the third game of the weekend against 4A Stansbury. Despite being competitive through the first four innings, the Stallions scored seven runs in the final three innings to earn a 10-2 win.

Carbon closed the weekend positively, putting together a rally in the back half of the game to secure an 8-5 win over the Grantsville Cowboys.

Playing from behind most of the game, the Dinos outscored Grantsville 6-1 in the final three innings. The win marked Carbon’s second of the season against 3A competition.

Vigil recorded the win on the rubber as he pitched five innings in relief, allowing six hits and just one earned run. Vigil kept the Cowboys off balance as he struck out six batters.

Carbon achieved a notable performance by recording 10 hits, the highest of the busy weekend, to successfully overcome a 4-2 deficit entering the fifth inning. Senior Kannon Childs sparked the breakout performance by going 3-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Six players recorded at least one hit as Vigil and Tyrus Madsen finished with multiple hits. Madsen ended 2-4 with two doubles, while Vigil notched a single and double.

March 19- vs. North Sanpete

On Wednesday, the Carbon baseball squad welcome North Sanpete to Price. Initially set for Tuesday, the contest was rescheduled because of the weather. North Sanpete has had the Dinos number lately, and that would continue on Wednesday as they handed the Dinos an 8-0 loss.

After beating them both times in the regular season last year, Carbon faced them in the first round of the playoffs, losing in a best-of-three play-in round.

The Hawks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first inning, and then the bats fell silent for both teams as the Dinos could not get any runs on the board in the contest. North Sanpete’s Hudson Smith was almost unhittable, earning a complete game win as he surrendered just one hit and struck out eleven.

Mike Vigil had the only hit for the Dinos, who fell to 2-6 this season and are still looking for their first region win.

Stockton Kennedy got the loss on the mound, going 4.1 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits, and striking out five. Maddex Willson was also on the hill during the game, putting in 2.2 innings of work where he gave up four earned runs on three hits while striking out four.

Carbon had lost three straight to North Sanpete, which dates back to the playoffs last season. On Friday, they broke that streak in a big way.

The first two innings were scoreless for both squads, but it wasn’t until the top of the third that the Dinos scored two runs. Carbon held that lead until the bottom of the fifth when North Sanpete rallied to take the lead 4-2.

At the top of the sixth, Carbon exploded, adding eight runs to take a commanding 10-4 lead. The Dinos used a combination of their pitching and defense in the field; they once again held North Sanpete off the scoreboard and added one more run to take the 11-4 win, moving them to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in region play.

The Dinos had gotten on track, winning their last two contests, both against Region 12 competition, an 11-4 win over North Sanpete and a 4-2 win over Delta.

Against Union, the Carbon bats were very quiet. Their only hit came in the top of the fourth. With the Cougars up 6-0, Tyrus Madsen came up to the plate and hit a single to left field. Last Tuesday, the Dinos welcomed the Rabbits to Price, and Carbon claimed a 4-2 win. On Friday, they looked to finish the season sweep.

The game on Friday started quietly. In fact, the whole game was very quiet for the Dinos, who were unable to find any offense until the seventh, with Delta up 1-0.

With a pair of outs, the Dinos’ Rydge Butler would cross the plate on a wild pitch to tie the score up at 1-1. Next batter was Maddex Willson, who sent a single to left field, scoring Mike Vigil and Jaxson Bosone before Jordan Nichols was thrown out advancing to second, but Carbon was able to capture the lead, 3-1. The Dinos were coming off a win over Delta on Friday, 3-1, which gave them the season sweep. Carbon sits at 5-9 overall and 3-2 in  Region 12 play. The Dinos also sit in the No.13 spot in the just-released RPI rankings.

The Wildcats tied the game and then took the lead 6-4. In the bottom of the seventh, the Dinos couldn’t generate any offense and lost game one to Richfield, 6-4.

Stockton Kennedy got the start on the mound, going 5.2 innings, and he gave up four runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out four. Willson entered the game to go 1.1 with two earned runs on three hits and struck out two.

April 4- @ Richfield

Offense was on display on Friday in Richfield, as both teams combined for 27 hits and 27 runs. After all the dust had settled, Carbon exploded in the top of the eighth inning to collect a 17-10 win over the Wildcats.

Carbon is at 6-9 overall and holds the No.11 spot in the latest RPI. Richfield is one spot ahead of the Dinos at No.  10 with a 4-9 record.

The contest started quietly for both teams, as neither had any offense in the first two innings. Richfield added a single run at the bottom of the third, and the Dinos answered back at the top of the fourth as Mike Vigil sent a single to left field, driving in Maddex Willson to tie things up.  Richfield found their offense in the bottom of the fourth and added four runs, taking the lead 5-1, but Carbon answered right back in the top of the fifth, when they would tie the game back up with a four-run effort.

In the next few innings, each team traded leads. Carbon added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh when Vigil sent one over the left field wall, bringing Willson home, giving Carbon a slight edge of 9-8 until the bottom of the seventh, when the Wildcats tied things up at 9-9 to send the game to extras. Even though Richfield had the last at-bats, Carbon would build an insurmountable lead in the top of the eighth.

With the bases loaded, Willson stepped in and sent a grounder to left to bring Rydge Butler home.  Again, Vigil came to the plate to send a single line drive to the left, driving in Willson, which brought about a pitching change for Richfield. Logan Madrigal was the first Dino batter up and was sent to first with a walk, bringing in Jakson Bosone. Next up was Paxton Falk, who looked at four pitches before sending the fifth one to center, bringing Willson and Vigil home to push the Carbon lead to 14-9. Madrigal would then score on a wild pitch, and Tyrus Madsen sent a fly ball that was mishandled by the shortstop, allowing Butler to score.  The Dions were able to hold the Wildcats to a single run in the bottom of the frame to take a 17-10 win.

Vigil had a day at the plate going 3-4, including the home run, collecting four RBIs, and scoring one for Carbon. Willson was close behind at 3-5 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Butler was 2-4, scoring three times, and Logan Bennett was 2-5  with an RBI and a run scored in the win.

April 11- @ Canyon View

Runs were hard to come by for the Carbon Dino baseball team on Friday in Cedar City, when they faced the No. 1 Canyon View Falcons. Coming off a loss earlier in the week, the Dinos were looking for a split of the season series, but it was not to be as they fell to the Falcons 10-0 in five innings.

Last Tuesday, the Falcons were in Price to face the Dinos, with Canyon View winning 2-0. Carbon slid to 6-11 overall and 4-4 in Region 12 play. They also hold the No. 12 spot in the RPI rankings. The Falcons sit atop 3A at No. 1.

Carbon could only manage three hits as the Falcons’ Zach Maine threw just 41 pitches across five shutout innings. April 22- @ Juab

If you like defensive baseball, then Nephi was the place to be on Tuesday when Carbon and the Juab Wasps hit the diamond. The Dinos’ Mike Vigil threw a great game, allowing just two hits through seven innings, and it would take an extra frame to get the 1-0 win.

This was a big win for the Dinos, who sit at 8-12 overall and 6-5 in Region 12. They also hold the No. 7 spot in the latest RPI.

This was a pitcher’s duel in every sense of the word, as both teams could hold the other off the scoreboard. The Wasps used a pair of pitchers who combined for five hits and gave up one run, while they struck out six.

Both teams leaned on their fielding to push the game to extra innings, but Carbon was able to plate the first run in the top of the eighth when Vigil stepped up to the plate and sent a line drive to center that brought in Logan Bennett to take a 1-0 lead. Paxton Falk came in to close the game and got the first three batters to hit pop flies into the outfield where the Dinos were waiting, ending the game and giving Carbon the region win.

Vigil did it all for Carbon, going 2-4 with the one RBI. Logan Bennett was 1-3 with a run scored, Ty Madsen went 1-4, and Jordan Nichols was 1-3 in the win.

Trevor Williams, Stockton Kennedy, Mike Vigil, Kanon Childs, Ty Madsen, Rydge Butler, and Logan Madrigal all played their final regular-season game in front of the home crowd, and they did not disappoint.

Emery jumped on the board in the first when Tyce Larsen hit into a double play, but after tagging up, Beau Stilson scored.  Hayden Christiansen came up to bat next, sending a double to center, driving in Hayden Abrams to put the Spartans up 2-0.

The Dinos would wait until the bottom of the second with two outs on the board, and with a swing of the bat, Childs sent a double to center, bringing home Jordan Nichols and Cash Withers, tying the score at 2-2. In the third, Butler scored off of an error by the catcher to give Carbon the lead at 3-2, and then in the fourth, Madsen would fly out to center, but Withers came home after tagging up, giving the Dinos the 4-2 lead.

The next couple of innings were quiet for both teams until the top of the seventh, when the Spartans put together a rally.

Emery started the inning with two singles, and with runners on first and third, Bronx Olsen came up to the plate and flied out to right field, which gave Christiansen time to score after tagging up. However, that is where the Emery rally would end. Paxton Falk, who had entered the game as a pitcher, retired the next two Spartans to give Carbon the 4-3 win.

Christiansen led the way for Emery, going 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Abrams was 1-3 with one run, and Garrett Conover was 1-3 in the loss.

A big fifth inning lifted the Carbon Dinos past the Emery Spartans 5-3 Friday afternoon, earning a season-series sweep in the process, in Castle Dale.

Stockton Kennedy pitched five strong innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs, while striking out seven to earn the win. Paxton Falk earned a six-out save, preventing the Spartans from forcing extra innings.

“We played well, and we have to hand it to Emery because they gave us a challenge for two great baseball games,” said manager Rob Smith, following the win on Friday afternoon. “Stockton had an awesome game, as he has all year. He came out, did his job, and gave us an opportunity to win, then Paxton came out and closed the game down.”

The Dinos never trailed, taking an early lead as Rydge Butler scored the game’s first run on a passed ball in the top of the first inning. Carbon extended its advantage to two as Maddex Willson laced an RBI single to score Logan Bennett in the third.

Hitless for the first two innings, the Spartans finally received a spark as Beau Stilson beat the tag with a head-first slide into third for a triple. Stilson scored the first run for Emery moments later, also on a passed ball.

The score remained 2-1 until the Dinos broke through in the fifth inning with three runs. The rally started with back-to-back singles from Wilson and Logan Madrigal. Tyrus Madsen and Kanon Childs each laced doubles on the ensuing at-bats, extending the lead to 5-1.

Emery’s most productive inning followed in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring two runs. Stilson and Garrett Conover delivered sacrifice RBIs, scoring Bronx Olsen and Payton Nielson.

Needing two runs to force an extra frame, the Spartans had life as Olsen reached with a one-out single. Falk then recorded a strikeout and a pop-up to record the final two outs, leaving one runner stranded.

May 8- North Sanpete- Super Regionals

Runs were hard to come by on Thursday at the diamond at Carbon High School when the Dinos faced the North Sanpete Hawks. By the time the Hawks got on the board in the third, it was apparent this would be a low-scoring affair, and it was, as the Hawks took game one of the best-of-three series, 2-1.

Carbon ended the regular season with a 10-13 overall mark and is currently ranked No. 8. North Sanpete was also ranked 10-13 and is ranked No.9. The two teams split the season series this year.

If defensive baseball is your thing, this was the game for you. It took two full innings before either team could plate a run, and North Sanpete struck first, scoring in the top of the third, to take the 1-0 lead.

Carbon struggled with Hawks’ pitching, collecting only two hits, one of which was a home run from Paxton Falk’s bat, to cut into the North Sanpete lead, 2-1.

Both teams went silent again for the remainder of the contest, giving the Hawks the first win in this best-of-three series.

Falk was 1-3 with one RBI and a run for Carbon. Vigil had the other Dino hit a double in the bottom of the fourth.

Vigil also got the start on the mound, going 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out two. Falk came in, going 2.1 innings with no hits and no runs, and struck out one.

May 9- North Sanpete- Super Regionals

The Carbon Dinos scored one run in each of the final three innings. Still, it was not enough to overcome an early deficit, as the North Sanpete Hawks completed a two-game sweep with a 4-3 win in the Super Regionals on Friday afternoon in Price.

Trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning with two outs, Carbon senior Tyrus Madsen sent an RBI single down the third base line, bringing the Dinos within one. With runners on first and second, senior Kanon Childs grounded a 2-1 pitch to the shortstop, ending the potential seventh inning rally.

Senior pitcher Stockton Kennedy tossed five solid innings as the starter for the Dinos. During his time on the mound, he allowed eight hits, three earned runs, and three strikeouts. Paxton Falk worked the final inning, giving up only two hits while striking out one batter.

North Sanpete took the lead early, scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until the Hawks plated two more runs in the fourth, taking a hefty 3-0 advantage.

Peyton Rostron pitched five innings for the Hawks, giving up five hits and one earned run. Gage Robison earned a hold despite allowing one run in a high-leverage relief appearance. Preston Madsen recorded the save as he logged the final three outs.

Tyrus Madsen was a steady source of offense for the Dinos, finishing 2-4 with two singles and an RBI. Falk finished the game 2-4. Rydge Butler and Maddex Willson each recorded one RBI.

Friday’s outcome marks the second consecutive year that Carbon’s season has ended at the hands of North Sanpete in Super Regionals. Last year, the Hawks won consecutive games after falling behind 1-0.
