Spartan baseball hit its stride at the right time heading into postseason play, but unfortunately, they ran into the eventual State Champion Canyon View Falcons. Emery sat in the No. 12 spot in the final RPI, turning things on with back-to-back Super Regional wins at Manti and moving them into the next rounds, where they faced last season’s runner-up, Morgan, winning not one but two meetings with the Trojans; however, the Spartans came up just short in the final round against Canyon View.
Coach Chase Julian joined us to talk about the successes of the 2025 baseball season. He discussed the senior class and what the off-season will look like.
“They’ve grown tremendously, they’re great kids”, speaking of the seniors. “They’re great athletes, they’re great kids, they’re great in the community. To be a part of that and to be able to say that I was a part of their lives, it’s truly an amazing thing as a coach, and that’s kind of what makes coaching all the better.”
“We have a summer league that we’ll be playing in, and we’ll hit some tournaments. I think one’s in June and one’s in July. I think we’ve got seven double headers scheduled in June, so we’ll get some work in and try to wrap things up so they can get into the swing of football”, speaking on the offseason.
Below is a recap of the 2025 Emery Spartan baseball season.
March 4- vs. Union
It’s windy and cold in early March—it must be time for some spring baseball. The Spartans opened the 2025 season on Tuesday, welcoming the defending 3A State Champion Union Cougars to Castle Dale. The Cougars struck in the first inning and again in the fourth to earn the lead. The Emery rally in the seventh came up short, and Union handed the Spartans a 6-3 loss.
The Spartans ended last season 17-13 overall and entered the postseason as the No. 8 seed, falling to Morgan. Union won it all with two straight wins over Manti in the Championships. Last season, these two teams met in the season opener in Roosevelt, as Emery came away with the 5-4 win.
The Cougars got on the board first, putting up a pair of runs in the opening frame, but then Union’s defense took over, working through six scoreless innings. The Cougars’ bats would come alive again in the fourth, plating four more runs to take a 6-0 lead.
After building the lead, the Union sent Brennen Mecham to the mound. He pitched three straight innings of 1-2-3 ball, logging nine straight outs and defending the lead until the bottom of the seventh.
The Spartans would find some much-needed offense with their final three outs in front of them. First up in the bottom of the seventh was Tyce Larsen. Larsen worked the count full and then hit one that trailed foul down the first base line, but left Union enough room to catch it and record the first out. Peyton Nielson was next, sending a line drive to center for a single. Trygg Jensen stepped into the batter’s box, taking the first pitch for a ball and then being hit by the next, giving Emery a pair of base runners. Hayden Christiansen was the next batter up, working his way through the count and finally finding a pitch he liked, sending a line drive to left field, bringing Nielson home to put Emery on the board for the first time in the contest.
Hayden Abrams stepped up to the plate, flying out to left field, putting two outs on the board for the Spartans. Treven Gilbert singled to left, bringing Jensen home to push the score to 6-2. With two outs and two on, Garrett Conover came to the plate and took his second pitch to center, giving Christiansen the chance to score, adding one more run. Bronx Olsen was up next and fought through pitch after pitch sending a fly to right field for the final out and the rally came up just short 6-3.
Gilbert collected three hits in the game for the Spartans and added an RBI. Christiansen earned a hit, a run, and one RBI. Nielson got on the stat sheet with a hit and one run, and Conover had one hit and one RBI. Larsen had one hit, and Jensen collected a run in the loss.
Gilbert also started on the mound, going two innings, surrendering two hits and two runs with one strikeout. Christiansen entered the game to go a couple of innings with three hits, four earned runs, and struck out three, and Hayden Abrams closed the game with a pair of hits and four strikeouts.
March 11- @ Uintah
On Tuesday, the Emery Spartan baseball team was still searching for its first win when it traveled to Vernal to face the Uintah Utes. The first two innings were all about offense for both teams, but the Utes would find another three runs and handed the Spartans their second loss of the season, 9-7.
Emery opened the season at home with the defending 3A Champion Union Cougars falling 6-3.
The Spartans hit the ground running at the top of the first when Treven Gilbert was intentionally walked to load the bases. Garrett Conover stepped up to the plate and sent a grounder to left field that drove in Hayden Christiansen and Hayden Abrams. Bronx Olsen came up to bat with a pair of outs with two on and connected on a line drive to center that brought home Gilbert to put Emery ahead 3-0, headed to the bottom of the inning.
Uintah found offense in the first and added three runs to tie things up, heading to the second. In the second, with the bases loaded, Abrams found his pitch with a 1-2 count and sent it over the wall in left field to bring everyone home with a grand slam, putting the Spartans back in front 7-3.
Uintah found three runs in the inning to cut the Spartan lead to 7-6 and then went quiet for an inning. The Utes would score two on a double in the bottom of the fourth, all while holding Emery scoreless as they took a slight lead at 8-7.
In the bottom of the sixth, Uintah added one more run and, in the top of the seventh, got three outs on four batters as Cooper Kay walked one but got out of the inning to secure the win for the Utes, 9-7.
Abrams had three hits with four RBIs and scored two runs for the Spartans. Christiansen had two hits and scored two runs; Beau Stilson collected two hits and one run scored; Conover had two RBIs and one hit, and Olsen earned one hit and an RBI.

In Emery’s first game on Thursday, they faced host Grand. The Spartans got on the board early, holding the Red Devils off the scoreboard until the sixth, and powered through to take the 9-2 win.
The Spartans jumped on the board in the second, putting two up, but, more importantly, with Trevin Gilbert on the mound and the Emery defense behind him, they were able to hold Grand scoreless until they were already up six as Grand would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Emery added three more in the top of the seventh to collect a 9-2 win.
Bronx Olsen was 3-3 at the plate, scoring one run; Beau Stilson scored 2-2 with a run and three RBIs, and Tyce Larsen scored 2-3 with a pair of RBIs and scored one.

In the second game on Friday, they would face the Beaver Beavers. It was a tight game from beginning to end, but the Beavers handed the Spartans their only weekend loss, 5-4.
Emery put one run up in the first inning and followed that up with another in the third to take a 2-0 lead after the top of the inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Beaver tied things up with a pair of runs of their own. Each team would add two runs in the sixth inning, and Emery couldn’t plate any runs in the seventh, but Beaver would get one across the plate to take the 5-4 win.

The Spartans were set to welcome the Falcons on Tuesday and then turn around and travel to Cedar City on Wednesday, but the weather forced the two teams to play a doubleheader in Castle Dale instead.
The opening contest was close, but the Spartans still came up on the short end of the 5-3 score.
Canyon View scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added single runs in the third and fourth innings. The Falcons held the Spartans off the scoreboard until the seventh, but the Emery rally fell short when they could only plate three runs in their last at-bat.

“We played well, and we have to hand it to Emery because they gave us a challenge for two great baseball games,” said manager Rob Smith, following the win on Friday afternoon. “Stockton had an awesome game, as he has all year. He came out, did his job, and gave us an opportunity to win, then Paxton came out and closed the game down.”
The Dinos never trailed, taking an early lead as Rydge Butler scored the game’s first run on a passed ball in the top of the first inning. Carbon extended its advantage to two as Maddex Willson laced an RBI single to score Logan Bennett in the third.
Hitless for the first two innings, the Spartans finally received a spark as Beau Stilson beat the tag with a head-first slide into third for a triple. Stilson scored the first run for Emery moments later, also on a passed ball.
The score remained 2-1 until the Dinos broke through in the fifth inning with three runs. The rally started with back-to-back singles from Wilson and Logan Madrigal. Tyrus Madsen and Kanon Childs each laced doubles on the ensuing at-bats, extending the lead to 5-1.
Emery’s most productive inning followed in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring two runs. Stilson and Garrett Conover delivered sacrifice RBIs, scoring Bronx Olsen and Payton Nielson.
Needing two runs to force an extra frame, the Spartans had life as Olsen reached with a one-out single. Falk then recorded a strikeout and a pop-up to record the final two outs, leaving one runner stranded.
May 5- @ North Sanpete
The Emery Spartan baseball team wrapped up its regular season on Monday in Mount Pleasant, where it faced the North Sanpete Hawks. The Spartans collected an 11-0 shutout win, and then on Tuesday, they found out their postseason fate, earning the No. 12 spot in the final RPI.
Emery finished the regular season with an 8-17 overall mark and went 4-10 in Region 12. On Tuesday, the Utah High School Activities Association released the final RPI and bracket for the 3A State Championships, with the Spartans landing in the No.12 spot.
Monday was the last day of the regular season, and the Spartans had to play a make-up game with the Hawks. The contest was a defensive battle until the Spartans came alive in the sixth.
Emery started the inning with three singles off the bats of Beau Stilson, Trygg Jensen, and Hayden Abrams. Tyce Larsen stepped up with the bases loaded and sent a double to left field, bringing in Stilson and Jensen. One batter later, Trevin Gilbert sent a single to the left to drive in Abrams. Later in the inning, with the score sitting at 6-0, Jensen came back to the plate and drilled a single to left, driving in Garrett Conover and Bronx Olsen to give the Spartans the 8-0 lead.
The Spartans made quick work of the Hawks in the bottom of the sixth and then went back to work in the top half of the seventh. With two on, Olsen came up to the plate and, through a series of wild pitches and errors, Larsen would score, and Christiansen got himself into scoring position as Olsen grounded out to the shortstop, but that gave Christiansen just enough time to make it home, putting Emery’s lead at 10-0. The Spartans added one more off a Stilson single that let Conover come home. Emery got North Sanpete down one-two-three to take the 11-0 win.
Larsen led the way for the Spartans, going 3-4 with two RBIs and scoring two runs. Conover and Jensen each went 2-4, earning two RBIs and one run. Stilson was 2-5 with a pair of RBIs and scored on a run in the rout.
Gilbert got the complete game win on the mound, giving up five hits and striking out six.
May 8- Manti- Super Regionals- Game One
The Spartan baseball squad traveled to Manti to face the Templars in game one of the best-of-three series. Emery jumped out early to take a lead and never looked back, earning the 8-0 win.
Emery was ready for this game, and it showed early. After a Hayden Christiansen single, Trevin Gilbert sent a double to left to bring him in. A Bronx Olsen sacrifice to advance Gilbert to third, and a Garrett Conover single to right brought Gilbert home. With two outs and Conover on first, Beau Stilson stepped up and slammed a double to center, driving Conover in to give Emery a 3-0 lead.
A Conover single in the third drove Christiansen home, giving the Spartans a four-run lead.
Things went quiet for the next three innings, but in the seventh, the Spartans got back to work and were ready to put the contest away.
A Tyce Larsen double started Emery’s inning. Christiansen came up next, getting on base with a single. Gilbert came to the plate, hitting a grounder to short and reaching on an error, bringing Larsen home. Olsen would hit a sacrifice fly to right, driving in Christiansen. Conover was up next, getting hit by a pitch, then Peyton Nielson came up and hit into a fielder’s choice, driving Frandsen in to score. Stilson would return to the plate and send a sacrifice fly to left to bring Nielson home to put the score at 8-0.
The Spartans kept the Templars at arm’s length in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win.
Christiansen went 3-4 at the plate with three runs for Emery. Stilson was 3-4 with a pair of RBIs, Conover went 2-3 with a pair of runs and RBIs, and Gilbert went 2-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored in the win.
Hayden Abrams pitched a gem, getting the complete game win, giving up four hits and no runs while striking out five.
May 9- Manti- Super Regionals- Game Two
The No. 12-seeded Emery Spartans completed the upset and series sweep of No. 5 Manti with a 9-7 road win Friday afternoon, clinching a spot in the final eight of the 3A State Championship Tournament.
A day after stunning Manti 8-0, the Spartans continued to hit the ball with ferocity, avoiding the decisive game three by scoring runs in the final four innings to earn the win.
Trailing 4-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning, the Emery bats awoke. The biggest frame came in the sixth as the Spartans plated five runs to put the game on ice.
Hayden Sitterud dazzled at the plate, finishing 3-4 with an RBI and a double. Treven Gilbert, Tyce Larsen, Bronx Olsen, Peyton Nielson, and Trygg Jensen finished with two hits.
The explosive Emery offense forced Manti to dig deep into pitching early. The Templars relied on Kellen Lund, Tazj Hill, and Russell Squire to save the season. Regardless of the pitcher, the Spartans were seeing beach balls. Emery gathered 16 hits, six RBI, and five extra-base hits as a team.
Garrett Conover received most of the work on the mound, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing only three runs. Conover managed to keep the Templars off balance as he fanned five batters of the 24 faced to earn the win.
The win on Friday sets the stage for the final week of the season. The Spartans will join seven other teams for a week-long double-elimination tournament at Utah Valley University in Orem.
May 12- Morgan- State Championships
Fresh off an upset of the Manti Templars, the Emery Spartans traveled to Utah Valley University to open bracket play in the 3A state tournament. They took on the Morgan Trojans, who just a year ago eliminated the Spartans from postseason play. Emery would avenge last year’s postseason loss against Morgan, coming away with a 10-3 upset win over the Trojans.
Morgan would break the ice early, with the bases loaded, Emery would give up a fielder’s choice to junior Cooper Stuart, bringing one Trojan home and giving Morgan the 1-0 lead. Emery would battle back and escape the remainder of the inning unscathed.
Emery would go three up, three down at the top of the third, but Morgan would continue their offensive momentum. Junior Luke Baurele would hammer a stand-up triple to set the Trojans up in scoring position. A hard ground ball to shortstop from junior Easton Venz brought Baurele home to increase Morgan’s lead 2-0.
Looking to strike back, Emery loaded the bases at the top of the fourth. Senior Trevin Gilbert capitalized on the opportunity, hitting a sacrifice fly that brought home two runners for the Spartans to even the score at 2-2. Sophomore Garrett Conover continued the momentum, hitting a single to bring home senior Hayden Christiansen and give Emery the lead at 3-2.
The Spartans wouldn’t stop there, with junior Peyton Neilson poking a single through to bring home senior Jace Frandsen – doubling up the Trojans 4-2. A Beau Stilson single would again load the bases for Emery, something sophomore Trygg Jensen would capitalize on, slapping an RBI single to shallow right field to bring another runner home. Senior Hayden Sitterud would pop up a ball to deep center field, sacrificing himself for another Emery RBI and a 6-2 advantage.
Circling back to the top of the order, junior Tyce Larsen smoked a ball into right field, bringing two more runners across home plate and building the lead even further to 8-2.
Emery would end the fourth inning scoring eight runs on six hits.
Emery would drive the dagger a little deeper in the top of the sixth when Sitterud smashed a ball over the left field wall for a two-run homer. This elevated Emery’s lead to 10-2.
A late run would come through in the bottom of the seventh for the Trojans, but it was too little, too late as Emery came away with the 10-3 win.
“The bigger the game the bigger these kids step up,” said Manager Chase Julian following the contest. ”It’s contagious when you get going, it gets everyone going. It’s amazing what it can do”
Sitterud would end the evening with the win on the mound, going six full innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs, but striking out six Trojans. Offensively, Sitterud went 2-3, scored two runs, and scored three RBIs.
Rounding out the Spartans’ offensive attack was Larsen, who went 1-3 with two RBIs. Jensen, Gilbert, Conover and Neilson each added an RBI of their own.
May 13- Canyon View- State Championships
Following Monday’s thrilling 10-3 upset over the Morgan Trojans, the Emery Spartans took the field against a familiar foe: the Canyon View Falcons. Canyon View dominated throughout the contest – an effort highlighted by a five-run fifth inning as the Falcons cruised to a 13-1 win.
Canyon View would draw blood early, first drawing a walk with the bases loaded to grab an early lead. Zach Maine for the Falcons would then hit a single to bring home Jeter Sanders and hand Canyon View an early 2-0 lead.
Emery would strike back in the bottom of the first, a Beau Stilson triple set the Spartans in scoring positions, and a Hayden Sitterud ground out would bring Stilson home to cut into the Canyon View lead 2-1.
Not wanting Emery to get back into the contest, Canyon View would increase their offensive effort, starting the second inning with an RBI double courtesy of Trenton Ludlow to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The next batter, Asher Slack, would bring home two more Falcons and build the lead even higher to 5-1.
Canyon View would tack on a few insurance runs against the Spartans in the top of the fifth. A Chase McClellan bunt brought Jarron Bradshaw home. Immediately following this, a Jake Thomas bunt allowed Price Atwood to cross home plate. A stand-up triple from Cannon Williams brought home two and increased the Canyon View advantage to 9-1.
Slack would collect another RBI, hitting a center field single that brought Williams across home plate to cap off a five-run inning for the Falcons and create a daunting 10-1 lead.
Canyon View would put the final touches on the route in the sixth, scoring three runs and raising the Falcons’ advantage to 13-1. With the mercy rule in effect, Emery could not bring the game within nine, ending the contest in the sixth inning with Canyon View coming away with the 13-1 win.
Emery ended the contest with one run on five hits with 12 strikeouts as a team. Defensively, the Spartans committed three errors. The Spartans utilized four pitchers in the contest. The pitching staff gave up 13 runs on 11 hits and struck out two.
“Our goal is still a state championship,” said Senior Jace Frandsen following the contest. “We still think we’re the best team out here, and we’re not the underdog to any team.”
May 14- Morgan & Canyon View- State Championships
Fighting to stay alive in the 3A state tournament, the Emery Spartans took the diamond on Wednesday, May 14. Conjuring feelings of déjà vu, Emery again faced the Morgan Trojans, a team whom the Spartans defeated 10-3 Monday evening to open bracket play. Again Emery would emerge victorious 7-5, setting up a second showdown with the top seeded Canyon View Falcons.
In a second showdown with Canyon View, the Spartans played the Falcons close but found their bats coming up short as they were eliminated in a 2-0 defensive showdown.
Morgan
Both teams were held scoreless through the first, but the Trojans drew first blood in the bottom of the second. Junior Cooper Stuart would send a line drive to left field, bringing home sophomore Owen Gilson and placing himself on second base with the double. Kanyon Leonelli would follow this up by hitting into a fielder’s choice that allowed Stuart to cross home plate and give Morgan the 2-0 lead.
Emery answered back in the top of the Third, a rally kicked off by a Beau Stilson fielder’s choice and subsequent steal of second base. Trygg Jensen would capitalize on this momentum, sending a shot to left field and bringing Stilson home, making it a 2-1 ballgame.
Morgan’s offense didn’t slow down in the bottom of the third. A wild pitch set up an RBI single courtesy of Easton Venz, which allowed Luke Baurele to score. The Spartans’ defense was able to limit the damage, but nonetheless, the Trojans entered the fourth with a 3-1 advantage.
Not wanting to fall behind, Emery’s offense exploded for a five-run top of the fourth, a flurry started with a Trevin Gilbert double to bring freshman Brek Griffin across the threshold. Emery would knot the game at three apiece off a Garrett Conover double to bring Gilbert home. Emery would take the lead for the first time off a Morgan error that allowed Conover to score.
This lead would increase further when Jensen picked up two more RBIs on the day, sending a triple to center field that brought home Peyton Neilson and Stilson, and gave Emery a 6-3 lead entering the bottom of the fourth.
Morgan rallied back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs and putting pressure on the Spartans for the remainder of the game.
Neither team scored until the seventh, when Tyce Larsen slammed a single to bring home Hayden Sitterud, giving Emery a 7-5 lead, which they held until the end of the contest.
Jensen led the way for Emery, ending the contest with two hits and three RBIs. Gilbert collected one hit, one RBI and scored one run. Zander Robinson came away with the win on the mound, going 3.2 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.
With the win, Emery advanced to again face Canyon View.
Canyon View
It was a defensive gem as the Spartans met the Falcons. Fresh off the win against the Trojans, Robinson threw a complete game, halting a potent Canyon View offense that, up to this game, had put the mercy rule on every team they faced in the tournament.
The difference maker in the elimination game was a single error by the Spartans in the bottom of the second inning. The error allowed Jarron Bradshaw to cross home plate and Price Atwood to reach base. Two batters later, Atwood would score a run and elevate the Falcons to a 2-0 lead.
Neither team could score after the second inning, with Robinson going a full six innings while only allowing three hits and no walks. For Canyon View, Chandler McClellan would toss six innings, giving up two hits, three walks, and striking out five in the 2-0 win.
With the loss, the Spartans’ season has come to a close with a top-four finish and a 12-19 record.
Castle Country Radio would like to congratulate the Spartans on their season and wish the squad’s seniors good luck in their future endeavors.
