Steven Tanner passed away from cancer surrounded by friends and family on June 6th, 2025. He will no longer be with us to keep a watchful eye on the Sheriff’s Office and County Commissioners. His dedication to holding public officials accountable will be deeply missed.

Steve was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 7th, 1942. Steve had many accomplishments, but his greatest was his marriage to his wonderful wife, Maurine Tanner for over 56 years. She was the love of his life.  One of Steve’s greatest joys in life was spending hours working in his beautiful yard. With Steve’s artistic flair, he turned his three acres into a work of art. Steve found pride in growing sumac trees, which he would harvest and transport the willows to Native American tribes across the Southwest to use for basket making. Steve was an avid collector and supporter of Native American art. He was also passionate about the conservation of Nine Mile Canyon. He spent many weekends there with his close friend Ivan White, making sure the petroglyphs were preserved and the canyon was protected.

Steve also loved everything rodeo. He was a team roper and made the college national finals back in his earlier days. There was not a rodeo he wouldn’t watch on a Friday or Saturday night. Steve made his own custom saddle that he swears will not fit another man.  Steve spent many years dedicated to helping the youth in Carbon County’s 4-H program. He loved seeing children grow a passion for farming and ranching.

Steve was a mine engineer and surveyor. One of his biggest accomplishments was the design of the Valley Camp Mine in Scofield, Utah. He spent 25 years at the mine before retiring to pursue other opportunities. The Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining will read this obituary with a sigh of relief that they will no longer be receiving complaints.

Steve leaves behind his loving wife, Maurine; his two sons, Justin (Brenda) and Heath (Karen); his “Baby Girl”, Kilee Hunt (Cody); and grandchildren, Travis, Dallas, Jessica, Tatum, and Ax’l.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dallas and Jean Tanner.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Good Life Senior Living. Their patience, kindness, and the bending over backwards for Steve, by them and the hospice team with Elevate Home Health, was so appreciated. Also, a special thanks to Mitchell Funeral Home who have be wonderful taking care of our family’s needs at this difficult time.

A celebration of life may be planned and announced at a later time. Arrangements are entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price and Huntington where friends and family may share memories of Steve online at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net.
