During the gathering of the Helper City Council on Thursday, July 3, Helper City Police Chief Sean Draper took the time to honor one of the city’s finest, Lara Olson.

“I was appointed as the chief of police in September of 2024. After being appointed, “It was my objective to analyze the department and figure out what needed to be changed,” said Draper, opening his remarks.

“During this analysis, I recognized the fact that this department has done incredible things over the last several years. They have conducted their own investigations, locating suspects in other parts of the country or state. Simply utilizing the minimal resources we have. They have intervened in medical emergencies that should have been recognized as lifesaving Awards. They have faced their darkest fears and looked at firearms and other various weapons directly in their face and successfully resolved the situations without injury to any party involved. But unfortunately, these events have gotten overlooked, ignored and forgotten.”

Draper continued,” On top of their greatest achievements in their careers being forgotten, they get the unfortunate displeasure of the court of public opinion, expressing ignorance across all platforms. They are disliked simply for the profession they have chosen and who they are. Internally, they are disregarded by society simply because they are a police officer. They are no longer human to some and are only visualized as a cop.”

Lamenting this reality, Draper chose to highlight these officers for the work they put in for the city and beyond. “It is difficult to continue moving forward if you are constantly beaten down and never lifted back up.” To start this series of spotlights, Chief Draper welcomed Olson to the podium.

The incident that earned this recognition came in September of 2024, during a routine check at an administrative checkpoint. While inspecting a vehicle, Olson was able to identify the scent of cannabis coming from the car. Working quickly, Officer Olsen searched the vehicle, discovering that the car contained $10,000, 90 pounds of marijuana, personal marijuana products and other paraphernalia.

“Both of the occupants were placed into custody and arrested for money laundering, distribution of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Ultimately, this case led to a successful conviction and forfeiture of the money seized,” explained Draper.

Following his remarks, he presented Olson with a plaque in recognition of her work in this case.

After receiving this award, Olson was met with a standing ovation from those in attendance at the meeting.
