Christopher Dennis Varndell, age 53, peacefully went from the arms of his family into the arms of Jesus on July 20, 2025. Christopher made his entrance into this world on March 24, 1972, and forever got to share that birthday with his daddy.
Christopher, affectionately known as “Mr. Smiley,” brought joy, laughter, and light to all who knew him. With a smile that could melt icebergs and a giggle that could light up a room; Christopher had a unique way of making every moment special.
He loved going on car rides and had a true spirit of adventure, traveling across the country with his family several times. He was happiest in the middle of the action—whether it was a busy family gathering, a birthday party filled with balloons, or a visit from his nephews and their dogs, Christopher’s face would light up with pure delight.
Christopher attended Castle Valley Center for many years until his “retirement” when they closed the adult program. The family would like to thank retired principal Mike Keller, the teachers, aides, and staff, and the bus drivers that were an integral part of their lives while he attended there.
Christopher had a deep and playful sense of humor. He loved to surprise people and “scare the poop out of them” whenever he had the chance. He had his own style of communication—often gritting his teeth to let you know exactly how he felt—and loved to remind people that you were his #1 fan. If you got too close while he was playing with one of his favorite toys, you might get a playful whack—his way of making sure you were part of the fun.
He had a special bond with his brother Phil. They shared a deep connection through their disabilities. For many years, they shared not only their bedroom but also a bed, though eventually they had to stop sharing a bed because Chris had had enough of Phil’s nighttime antics. Their connection remained unbreakable right up until the very end.
Christopher loved to be outside, soaking in the sounds of birds, sheep, goats, chickens, and recently a particularly enthusiastic rooster learning to crow. He adored music—especially Vivaldi’s Four Seasons—and movies, as well as his two favorite game shows, Let’s Make a Deal and The Price is Right. Loud, happy, energy always made him smile.
A true food lover, he especially enjoyed meals made by his Aunt Janey. He would begin giggling the moment he heard the food processor, knowing something delicious was on the way. And though he had his quirks (his family might remind him that they’d had enough coffee for the day so could he please quit gritting), every bit of his personality was cherished and deeply loved.
Christopher is survived by his parents, Harry and Elizabeth (more commonly known as Becky) Varndell, Jr. of Price, UT; his brothers, Harry (Becky) Varndell, III of Price, UT, Jim (Kris) Varndell of Rock Springs, WY, and Phillip Varndell of Price, UT; his nephews, Tanner (Jordan) Varndell of Rock Springs, WY, Daniel Varndell of Price, UT, Timothy Varndell of Price, UT, and Josiah Varndell of Price, UT; his Godmother, Helen Piwowar of Uniontown, PA; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Christopher was preceded in death by his grandparents, Betty and Joe Hudak of Uniontown, PA and Harry and Ann Varndell of Uniontown, PA; his Godfather, Bill Dawson of Uniontown, PA; his Aunt Marlene Hudak of Uniontown, PA; and his nephew, Samuel Varndell of Tucson, AZ.
The family extends special thanks to his many caregivers over the years from RISE, Rocky Mountain Home Care, Castleview Hospital, Symbii Home Health and Hospice and his nurse Diane, Utah Valley Wound Clinic, Dr. Gagon, Dr. Valdez, and Dr. Mark Olson.
Christopher’s presence was a gift—an endless source of joy, laughter, and love. He reminded us all of the beauty in small things, the power of a smile, and the importance of being yourself fully and unapologetically. He will be missed beyond words and remembered with endless love.
