021-7

In a thrilling showdown between two tournament heavyweights, Carbon’s Battle Baseball suffered a 4-2 extra innings loss to Hawaii Tuesday afternoon in the winner’s bracket of the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament in Price.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Alex Martinez knocked a two-RBI single to tie the game. Despite having the go-ahead run in scoring position, Battle was unable to end the game in walk-off fashion.

After a scoreless eighth frame, Hawaii captured a two-run lead in the top of the ninth. With the game on the line and bases loaded once again, Battle was unable to extend the game, falling in a hard-fought loss.

Martinez logged two of the team’s three hits as he finished 2-4 at the plate with two RBI and one walk. The other came from Jacen Urbanik, who started the seventh inning rally with a single.

Nate Tatton worked three solid innings as the starter for Battle, allowing three hits and one earned run. Austin Leonard pitched three innings in relief, allowing just one hit and fanning three batters. Jaxton Smith tossed three frames, striking out five batters while giving up two hits.

Both teams committed two errors in the field, and Hawaii held a slight advantage offensively, recording six hits to three. The difference in the game came with runners in scoring position, as Battle left bases loaded on three separate occasions.

Tuesday’s loss sends Battle into the one-loss bracket, where each game will now be an elimination tilt. Battle will now face Southern California on Wednesday morning at Carbon High School at 8:30 am.

The Battle 13U baseball team is coached by Darek Martinez, Rob Smith, Justin Powell, and Timmy Urbanik. The team consists of Callen Donaldson, Jack Madrid, Austin Leonard, Jacen Urbanik, Rigden Rhoten, Jaxton Smith, Alex Martinez, Mason Powell, Jace Bosone, Jacen Cowley, and Nate Tatton.
