The Green River Pirate baseball team got back on the diamond on Tuesday at home when they welcomed the Altamont Longhorns to Green River.  The Longhorns used a big fifth inning to close out the Pirates, handing them a loss to start the season 8-2.

The Pirates ended last season with an overall mark of 5-12, and welcome back a good core of players from last season, all with one extra year under their belts and ready to get going this season.

The Pirates got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the second inning when William Wilmarth came to the plate with two outs and one on and found a pitch that he liked, sending a double to center, driving in Gabriel Quintana to cut the Longhorn lead to 2-1.

Altamont added four runs in the top of the fifth, pushing their lead to 6-1, a score that would last until the bottom of the inning when David Mendez sent one to center to drive Cristian Mendoza home to put the score at 6-2, the Longhorns added a pair of runs in the sixth pushing ther score to 8-2 taking the win.

Wilmarth ended the contest 1-2 with an RBI. Quintana was 1-2 with a run scored, and Mendoza went 1-3, scoring one. Jason Hernandez and Mendez each collected a hit, with Mendez adding an RBI in the loss.

Rolando Anguiano got the start on the mound, going six innings, giving up eight runs on six hits, and striking out five. Mendoza went the rest of the way, collecting two strikeouts.

Green River heads back to the diamond on Friday when they welcome the Pinnacle Panthers.
