In the second game of the season for both teams, Pinnacle and Green River shared the diamond for the first time, with both teams looking for the first win of the year. It was Pinnacle that came out on top in a hotly contested battle, 6-5.
Both teams entered the game at 0-1, falling to the same opponent, Altamont. The difference in the game was all in the nine errors made by the Pirates.
Things got started early for the Panthers when Joey Howell would score off of an error by the first baseman. Two more errors would put two more on base, and Dominick Vigil sent one to center, driving in Brody Howell. The next batter up was Brevon Hyde, who grounded out to second but drove in Domonick Huitt to give the Panthers the 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, the Pirates would get on the board when Rolando Anguiano sent one to short as Cristian Mendoza scored to put the game at 3-1.
Both teams would score in the second inning as the Panthers’ Bryson Shumway brought home Joey Howell with a single to right. The Pirates earned one more run when Mendoza hit a single to center, giving Dominick Jarvis the opportunity to score, but the Panthers still held the 4-2 lead.
Green River would add another run in the fourth, but the game got exciting in the final two innings.
Another Pirate error allowed Vigil to come home to put the score at 5-3 in the top of the sixth. The Pirates came back with a run of their own when a pickoff attempt at first base gave Anguiano all the time he needed to score from third.
The top of the seventh had Brody Howell send one to third that brought home Shumway to give Pinnalce the 6-5 lead. The Pirates had another chance to earn the win, and they would come close when, with a pair of outs, David Mendez sent a triple to left, bringing in William Wilmarth to get the score to 6-5, and that was as close as the Pirates would get, as Pinnacle would get the final out to get the win.
Mendez went 2-4 for Green River and earned an RBI. Anguiano went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Jesus Escalante went 1-2 with a run in the loss.
Jason Henandez was on the hill, giving up six runs on seven hits and striking out nine.
Vigil was the big bat for the Panthers, going 3-4 with a run and an RBI. Shumway was 2-3, scoring one run and earning an RBI, and Joey Howell was 2-4, scoring two runs in the win.
Brody Howell earned the complete game win, surrendering five runs, three earned, on seven hits, striking out nine.
